Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves, behind a stellar pitching performance from starter Casey Crosby, shut out the Altoona Curve 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark to pick up their 10th win of the season.
The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the second against Altoona starter Jeff Locke. Audy Ciriaco led off with a double and Deik Scram walked putting two on for Francisco Martinez. A wild pitch advanced the runners to scoring position. After a Martinez pop out Michael Bertram singled home Ciraco for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Deik Scram led off with a single and Martinez reached on a fielder's choice and error by the second baseman Brock Holt. With one out, Bryan Holaday walked, loading the bases for Justin Henry. Henry hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Scram for a 2-0 lead. Ben Guez followed with a triple to right, plating Martinez and Henry for a 4-0 Erie lead.
In the sixth, Bertram led off with a double and moved to third on a Holaday single. With two outs, Bertram came home to score on a Jeremy Farrell error on a Brandon Douglas ground ball, making it 5-0 SeaWolves.
The five runs were more than enough for the SeaWolves pitching staff. Crosby (1-1) worked a season-high seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with two walks and a season-high seven strikeouts. It was Crosby's highest strikeout total since striking out eight on July 20, 2009 against Kane County. The win for Crosby was his first since August 18, 2009 against South Bend.
Lester Oliveros and Chance Ruffin closed out the Erie victory, combining to throw two hitless, scoreless innings in relief of Crosby.
The SeaWolves and Curve play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark...2:00 First Pitch. Righty L.J. Gagnier (2-1, 2.63 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Aaron Thompson (2-2, 3.22 ERA). Erie is going for its first series win since sweeping Binghamton April 11-12.
