Six Unanswered Goals Lead Steelheads to Series Sweep

Colorado Eagles News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Eagles with a 7-1 win, scoring six unanswered goals after an apparent go-ahead goal for Colorado was waived off. Idaho's special teams greatly aided their efforts, as the Steelheads killed all five of Colorado's power plays, while going 3-for-4 on their own man-advantage chances. The loss left the Eagles without a road win on the season (0-6-2), and extended their club-record road winless streak to eight games.

For the third time in the series, Idaho got the game's first goal just over six minutes in when Kael Mouillierat converted in the Steelheads' only power play opportunity of the first frame. The goal came with Colorado defenseman Cody Sol in the penalty box, which allowed him to get some retribution at 12:48 when he took a drop-pass from Trent Daavettila and tied the game from atop the left circle.

The Eagles scored a go-ahead goal under a minute later when Ray Kaunisto swept home a loose puck from the doorstep, however, referee Andy Thackaberry overturned the tally due to a quick whistle when he thought that Tyler Beskorowany had covered the puck. Colorado had their chance to get another goal with nearly a minute's worth of 5-on-3 play before the period ended, but they couldn't capitalize, sending the game into the first intermission tied at 1.

Idaho re-took the lead by taking advantage of their own elongated man-advantage opportunity midway through the second period when they were awarded a five minute power play with a full two minutes worth of 5-on-3 play in the middle of it. Colorado nearly killed all of it off, but with just 15 seconds left in the major, David de Kastrozza scored from the low slot to make it 2-1. And just 80 seconds later, following a faceoff in the right circle, Jace Coyle threw the puck on net from the right point and it deflected past Tyler Plante to give the home team a two-goal cushion.

Down by just a pair, the Eagles had a chance to get back in the game early in the third period with another power play opportunity, but they came up empty again and it was all Idaho after that.

At 7:41 of the final frame, de Kastrozza picked up his second goal of the game on a rush from the right circle. Matt Case followed with the Steelheads' third power-play tally of the evening less than two minutes later from the right point. Mathieu Tousignant made it 6-1 two minutes after that on a rush down the left wing -- forcing Plante from the game. And Austin Fyten finished the scoring two and a half minutes after that by putting home a loose puck from the doorstep.

The Eagles' next games will come next weekend when they travel to San Francisco, Calif. for the first time to take on the expansion Bulls.
