Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Shelby Miller fired six scoreless innings and the Memphis Redbirds (38-61) hit four home runs as they defeated the Oklahoma City RedHawks (58-41) 8-1 in front of 8,212 at AutoZone Park Friday night.
Heading into the game on a five-game winning streak in which they hit .386 as a team, the RedHawks were silenced to one run on eight hits-all singles. They did not have a runner reach second base until the sixth inning and did not score until a run came across on a double play in the ninth.
Miller (5-8) had one of his best outings of the season, allowing no runs over six frames. He scattered four singles with no walks and four strikeouts. He had a runner reach scoring position just once.
Memphis shot out to a five-run lead in the first. Matt Adams started the scoring with an RBI single, and two batters later, Eugenio Velez sent a sac fly to left field.
Zack Cox blasted a two-run homer to right center-field, and Ryan Jackson stepped up next and delivered a solo shot out to left.
Steven Hill added another homer in the third inning-an estimated 450-foot blast out of the stadium towards left-center field.
The Redbirds were quiet until the seventh when Mark Hamilton hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer to make it 8-0. Hamilton has hit three homers in his last five games against the RedHawks.
RedHawks pitcher Brett Oberholtzer was done in by the rough first inning. He bounced back nicely and 16 of the last 18 hitters he faced after the fifth run scored in the first. Oberholtzer (3-3) finished with six runs scoring over six innings with seven hits. He struck out seven with no walks.
The RedHawks will look to get back to their winning ways when they square off with the Redbirds Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. Live coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
