Sox Hold on for 8-7 Win, Series Split with Salt Lake

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (49-48) nearly let an early lead slip for the second straight night against the Salt Lake Bees (48-51), but held off a furious Salt Lake rally to earn a series split with the Bees and even the season record at 6-6 between the division rivals in 2012.

The Sky Sox offense got going early for the second straight game with Colorado Springs scoring on a pair of sacrifice flies in the first two innings and a two-run double by first baseman Chad Tracy in the third inning to give the Sox a 4-0 lead and notch his 16th game with a RBI in his last 22 starts. The Sky Sox built up a 6-0 lead with two runs in the fifth inning, with third baseman Brendan Harris scoring after leading off the inning with a triple and Tracy crossing home on a wild pitch by Salt Lake reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

Colorado Springs starter Edwar Cabrera (3-0, 3.48 ERA) remained perfect in four starts in a Sky Sox uniform as he held the Bees without a hit for the first four innings of the game, but Salt Lake rallied back for the second consecutive night as they scored three unearned runs off Cabrera in the sixth as the Sox committed two errors. Cabrera struck out nine Salt Lake batters in his six innings of work, as he had totaled just seven strikeouts in his last two starts after striking out 13 in his Sky Sox debut.

After the Sox responded to the three-run sixth by the Bees with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-RBI double by Brendan Harris, the Bees tightened the game to 8-7 as they batted around in the seventh inning and sent a total of ten batters to hit in the frame. After the margin was cut to a single run, Sox reliever Will Harris threw a perfect eighth inning and Coty Woods notched his second save in just four appearances for the Sky Sox this season as he sealed the win with a lineout to shortstop Tommy Field with the tying run only 90 feet away.

Colorado Springs utility man Matt McBride extended his team-high hitting streak to 12 games with four hits and two runs scored in the game. During his 12-game streak, McBride has either scored a run or collected a RBI in eleven of the twelve games, and has totaled 10 RBI and 13 runs scored during that time frame.

The Sky Sox now welcome another division rival in the Tacoma Rainiers for a five-game set, including a doubleheader on Sunday July 22, after the two teams just split a four-game series in Tacoma to start off the second half. In the series opener Colorado Springs will send out right-hander Rob Scahill (7-9, 5.44 ERA) to face off with Rainiers righty Andrew Carraway (4-4, 4.08 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. MT, in a game will feature the return of Friday Night Fireworks.
