Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, TN - The Memphis Redbirds and ServiceMaster have partnered for the second year in a row to sponsor a Welcome-to-Memphis celebration for the new Teach For America teachers joining the community. This will be a celebration of the upcoming school year and Memphis educators.
On Monday, July 23 nearly 200 new TFA teachers and 50 returning TFA teachers will gather at AutoZone Park for the second annual celebration.
"We have a strong commitment to education and laying the foundation for future growth and success in Memphis and communities we serve nationwide." said ServiceMaster Community Relations Manager Heather Wilson. "We are proud to partner with the Redbirds to show our support for the Teach For America program and welcome the 2012 Teach For America team to the city we chose to be our hometown."
This coming school year, more than 300 Teach For America teachers will reach more than 22,000 students in underserved schools in Memphis while more than 165 alumni are working from every sector to level the playing field for students and families in low-income communities.
"We thank ServiceMaster and the Memphis Redbirds for their help in focusing attention on education. This welcome event celebrates the commitment of our new teachers and dedicated educators city-wide. We're excited about the incredible potential of the students of Memphis and our community's effort to support student success this coming school year," said Athena Turner, Executive Director of Teach For America - Memphis.
A growing body of rigorous research demonstrates the effectiveness of Teach For America corps members as classroom teachers. In 2010 and 2011 the Tennessee Higher Education Commission conducted studies on the effectiveness of teacher preparation programs in the state. Both studies found Teach For America to be the top teacher preparation program in the state based on student academic growth. Additionally the study found that Teach For America has the largest share of teachers performing in the top twenty percent of all teachers statewide.
"The Redbirds and AutoZone Park are important to the city of Memphis," Wilson added. "We value supporting our local teams and appreciate the Redbirds for being one of the only nonprofit teams in the country. We have more than 2,000 associates that live in Memphis and the surrounding areas. Our associates and their families appreciate the recreation and family fun that the Redbirds games offer our city - and we want to highlight this as we are showing our new Teach For America teachers some of what Memphis has to offer."
