
Middlebrooks Promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket

Portland, Maine-The Boston Red Sox today promoted Sea Dogs' third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket. Right-handed pitcher Chris Martin will join the Sea Dogs from Single-A Salem. Middlebrooks is the second Sea Dogs player this week to earn a promotion. Right-Handed pitcher Alex Wilson was sent to Pawtucket on Tuesday.
Middlebrooks, 22 years-old, hit .302 (112-for-371) with 18 home runs and 80 RBI in 96 games for the Sea Dogs this season. He leads the Eastern League with 80 RBI and ranks among the league leaders in several offensive categories including slugging percentage (.520- 5th), home runs (18- Tied 5th), and average (.302- 8th). Middlebrooks was an Eastern League All-Star and participated in the XM Satellite Major League Baseball Futures Game in Phoenix, Arizona. Baseball America rated Middlebrooks as the "Best Batting Prospect" in the eastern League in 2011. Additionally, entering the season, Baseball America rated Middlebrooks as the "Best Infield Arm" in the Red Sox farm system. The Texas native established a new franchise record for most RBI's in the month of July with 29. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft.
Martin, a 25 year-old reliever, has split the 2011 season with Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem where he has posted a combined record of 6-1 with four saves and a 1.45 ERA. Martin opened the season with Greenville where he notched a 4-0 record with a 2.17 ERA in seven games earning a promotion to Salem on June 29th. In 13 games with Salem, Martin has posted a 2-1 record with a 0.92 ERA. He was signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in March 2011.
The Sea Dogs open a six game homestand with a 7:00 PM contest Friday night against the Binghamton Mets. On Saturday, the Sea Dogs will take part in the Futures at Fenway event which will feature the Sea Dogs and Mets playing at 1:05 PM at Fenway Park followed by a Pawtucket Red Sox game against the Syracuse Chiefs.
