Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio - Fort Wayne closer Nick Schumacher pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning to hold off a Dayton comeback bid as the TinCaps topped the Dragons 6-5 on Wednesday night before a crowd of 7,940 at Fifth Third Field. The TinCaps won two of three games in the series.

Schumacher began the ninth inning with a three-run lead, but allowed two runs as Dayton threatened to tie or win the game, advancing the tying run to third with the winning run at second and only one out. But Schumacher struck out Tommy Nurre for the second out and after an intentional walk to Didi Gregorius, got Ryan LaMarre to line out softly to second base to end the game.

Dayton rallied to make things interesting in the ninth. Trailing 6-3, Chris Richburg started the inning with base hit to left. Cameron Satterwhite looped a soft liner over second base and Fort Wayne center fielder Rico Noel was unable to make a diving catch, but the throw into second beat Richburg for a force play, the first out of the inning. Josh Garton followed with a single to right and Frank Pfister was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chase Weems singled to center to drive in two runs as Pfister advanced to third and Weems took second on the throw with a 6-5 score. But Schumacher got tough, stranding the runners to close out the game.

Fort Wayne built a 5-0 lead before the Dragons started back. The TinCaps scored three runs in the top of the third inning to break Dragons pitcher Tim Crabbe's consecutive scoreless innings streak at 19 and two-thirds. A two-out bases loaded walk brought in the first run to make it 1-0. The next batter, Nate Freiman, hit a hard ground ball to third that took a bad hop and skipped over the shoulder of Dragons third baseman Frank Pfister. Two runs scored on the hit to give Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead.

Fort Wayne's Danny Payne hit a home run with one out in the fifth. Later in the same inning, Freiman delivered an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Dayton's Nurre belted a long home run to left field leading off the bottom of the sixth inning. It was Nurre's third homer of the year. Two batters later, Henry Rodriguez singled to center, stole second, stole third, and scored when the throw to third by Fort Wayne catcher Jason Hagerty skipped into left field for an error as Dayton pulled to within three at 5-2.

In the Dayton seventh, Garton tripled to the center field fence with one out and scored on Pfister's ground out to second to pull the Dragons to within two at 5-3.

Fort Wayne scored one run in the top of the ninth to jump ahead 6-3 and turn it over to Schumacher for his 16th save.

Crabbe (1-1) suffered the loss. He worked five innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts.

New Dragons pitcher Kevin Arico made his professional debut, retiring the side in order in the sixth inning. Arico led the nation in saves this spring at the University of Virginia before being selected in the 10th round of the 2010 draft by the Reds.

The Dragons collected eight hits. Garton led the way, going 2 for 4. Satterwhite's 15-game hitting streak was snapped as he went 0 for 4, losing a hit in the ninth on the fielder's choice play on a ball that reached the center fielder. It was the second longest hitting streak in the league this season to date and tied for the third longest in Dragons history.

The Dragons (1-5) open a new series on Thursday at Fifth Third Field against the Great Lakes Loons (3-2). J.C. Sulbaran (3-4, 4.97) will start for Dayton against Elisaul Pimentel (8-3, 2.04). The series continues Friday and Saturday. Friday night's game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on Time Warner Basic Cable). Reds Assistant Director of Media Relations Jamie Ramsey, author of the popular blog "Better Off Red," will serve as the guest commentator.
