Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Portland, Maine - Kyle Weiland and two relievers combined on a five hit shutout as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Erie SeaWolves 1-0 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field in front of 4,513 fans. The Sea Dogs improved to 34-29, while the SeaWolves suffered their eighth straight loss falling to 26-37. The Sea Dogs recorded their second straight shutout.

Matt Sheely's two out RBI single in the fifth inning scoring Yamaico Navarro proved to be the only run the Sea Dogs would need.

Kyle Weiland (3-4) pitched 5.1 shutout innings allowing four hits, walking two and striking out five to earn his third straight win. Weiland was relieved by Mitch Herold in the sixth inning after allowing a one out walk to Michael Bertram and a double to Audy Ciriaco. With runners at second and third with one out, Herold struck out Deik Scram and Josh Burrus to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Herold tossed 2.1 shutout innings allowing one hit and recording three strike outs before giving way to Bryce Cox. Cox tossed the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit, earning his eighth save of the season.

Erie starter Duane Below (2-6) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run on four hits in five innings of work.

Luis Exposito would collect two of the five Portland hits on the evening; singles in the second and the sixth.

The Sea Dogs improve to 4-0 against the SeaWolves this season.

The Sea Dogs and SeaWolves will continue the series Wednesday night at 7:00 PM at Hadlock Field. 2010 Carolina League All-Star Alex Wilson will make his Double-A debut for the Sea Dogs. Wilson was 2-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 11 starts with Single-A Salem. He will be opposed by Erie's Thad Weber (3-7, 4.09).
