Yuhl, Tanielu Drive Hooks Past Missions
June 14, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Keegan Yuhl won his sixth game in seven decisions with five shutout innings and Nick Tanielu posted four RBIs as Corpus Christi rolled San Antonio 8-1 Monday at Whataburger Field before 6,748.
The Hooks (40-22), winners in 11 of their last 13, own a 10-1 record vs. San Antonio in 2016. The Missions (19-43) have dropped four straight.
Corpus Christi's magic number to clinch the Texas League South Division first-half championship is four.
Yuhl faced one over the minimum while throwing 77 pitches (52 strikes). He was responsible for one hit, a walk, and four strikeouts. A 35th-round selection by Houston two years ago, Yuhl stands 6-0 with 27 strikeouts over his last seven appearances.
Tanielu's fourth home run, a 367-foot shot to left off T.J. Weir, propelled the Hooks to a 3-0 first-inning lead. Weir allowed an Alex Bregman single and base-on-balls to J.D. Davis before the blast. The right-hander was also charged with three wild pitches.
Weir (1-2) paid for opening walks to Bregman and Derek Fisher in the third, Chase McDonald pushing a well-placed, two-out RBI single into center field for a 4-0 Corpus Christi lead.
Weir's wildness continued as he struck Davis with a bases-loaded pitch a frame later after singles from Alejandro Garcia and Teoscar Hernandez, plus a Fisher walk.
Weir, who threw 94 pitches (50 strikes) during four innings of work, yielded six hits and four walks. He fanned two.
His relief, Seth Simmons, surrendered a two-out solo homer to Roberto Pena in the fifth for a 6-0 Hooks bulge.
San Antonio then got on the board via River Stevens' two-out single off David Paulino, Miguel Del Castillo (double) crossing.
Consecutive two-out doubles by Davis and Tanielu restored Corpus Christi's six-run margin through six, and Pena capped the scoring with his second round-tripper of the evening and third of the season.
Paulino picked up his first save by working the final four innings and striking out six.
Bregman has a seven-game hitting streak. Garcia led all players with three hits.
The series and homestand conclude Tuesday at 7:05. Kent Emanuel (1-0) goes for Corpus Christi vs. Michael Kelly (2-1) on Mike Shaw Automotive Family Night and Half-Price Group Night.
