Nine Drillers Named to TL All-Star Squad
June 14, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
The rosters for the 2016 Texas League All-Star Game were released Tuesday afternoon by league President Tom Kayser, and the Tulsa Drillers were well-represented. The Drillers had nine players voted onto the North Division roster, giving them the highest number of participants of any team in the league. The Springfield Cardinals had the next highest total in the North Division with six players voted in, while the Corpus Christi Hooks had the most players named to the South Division roster with eight.
This year's game will be played on Tuesday, June 28 at Springfield's Hammons Field.
There were five Tulsa position players voted onto the club, along with four starting pitchers. Willie Calhoun, Drew Maggi, Alex Verdugo, Jacob Scavuzzo and Kyle Farmer were selected on the position player side of things while Brock Stewart, Trevor Oaks, Chase De Jong and Scott Barlow were nominated from the Drillers rotation.
Tulsa will have three players in the starting lineup with Calhoun, Maggi and Verdugo representing the club for the North. The starting pitcher for the contest has not yet been determined.
Maggi leads the Drillers with a .319 batting average and a .409 OBP, Calhoun leads the club with 12 home runs and 40 RBI, while Verdugo has been solid at the plate and in the field with a .282 average, 8 home runs and 32 RBI.
Scavuzzo has also been solid as he has played in 56 of the Drillers first 62 games, batting .285 with 5 home runs, 10 doubles and 22 RBI. Farmer earned a spot after almost single-handedly carrying Tulsa offensively for the first month and a half of the season before going on the disabled list at the end of May after being hit by a pitch on the hand.
On the pitching side of things, the Drillers saw four members of their starting rotation chosen as All-Stars as Tulsa currently leads the Texas League with a 2.96 ERA as a staff.
Before receiving his promotion to Triple-A last week, Stewart had the lowest ERA in the entire league with a 1.12 mark over 9 starts. Oaks leads the Texas League with an 8-1 record while ranking third with a 2.25 ERA. Similarly, De Jong (6-4, 2.57 ERA) and Barlow (3-3, 2.83 ERA) were selected as they are also both ranked in the Top 10 in the Texas League in ERA.
Members for the All-Star teams are determined by voting from league managers, coaches and media members.
Complete rosters for both teams are listed below. Both rosters are subject to change on account of transactions, injuries and player availability. Participants for the Home Run Derby will be announced at a later time.
