Four Missions Headed to TL All-Star Game
June 14, 2016 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio - Earlier today, Texas League President Tom Kayser announced the rosters for the 80th Annual Texas League All-Star Game, which will be held Tuesday, June 28th at Hammons Field in Springfield, MO.
The Missions will be sending four players to Springfield, with Nick Torres being named as the starting designated hitter for the South Division. Shortstop Jose Rondon and right-handers Jason Jester and Adam Cimber were also selected to the South Stars' roster.
In 57 games this season, Torres is hitting .304 (68-for-224) with 19 doubles, two triples, five homers, 26 RBI, 24 runs scored and five steals. Torres, who will turn 23 two days after the ASG, is currently leading the league in doubles, while ranking 2nd in both AVG and hits and T-3rd in extra-base hits. Though he was recently named Texas League Player of the Week (May 30-June 5), Torres' hot streak extends much further. In his 29 games since May 13, Torres is batting .362 (42-for-116) with 13 doubles, one triple, one homer, 10 RBI, seven runs and three steals. During that stretch, he leads the league in both hits and doubles, in addition to being 2nd in AVG and 3rd in XBH. Torres' recent 13-game hit streak is tied for the third-longest in the TL in 2016.
Rondon has been one of the league's hottest hitters of late as well, batting .354 (17-for-48) through 12 games in June. In 56 games for San Antonio this season, Rondon is hitting .270 (58-for-215) with 13 doubles, four homers, 25 RBI, 28 runs scored and seven steals. Rondon entered the 2016 season as the No. 5 prospect in the San Diego organization by both Baseball America and MLB.com.
Jester is enjoying a fine season as the club's closer. In 18 appearances for San Antonio, the Hallsville, TX native is pitching to a 2.14 ERA, while converting seven (T-3rd in the TL) of his eight save opportunities. The former Texas A&M hurler also sports an impressive K:BB ratio of 26:2 over 21 innings.
Cimber is 2-1 with a 2.28 ERA (6 ER/23.2 IP) in 19 appearances out of the San Antonio bullpen. Texas league hitters are batting just .224 (19-for-85) against the Missions' side-armer this season and lefties have just four hits in 27 at-bats (.148).
Following tonight's series finale at Corpus Christi, San Antonio will continue its nine-game road trip in Midland on Wednesday evening. The Missions will return to The Wolff on Sunday, June 19 when they open up a four-game series with the Hooks.
