Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, N.Y. - Well-rounded play by the Albany Devils helped knock off the Hamilton Bulldogs, 3-2, Saturday at the Times Union Center. The Devils relied on two rookies and a second-year player for the scoring as Joe Whitney, Mike Sislo and Darcy Zajac all found the back of the net.

Zajac netted the winner at 14:09 of the third period on a play setup by Vladimir Zharkov, who was playing in his first game since missing the last four with a lower-body injury.

"It was a quick regroup for us and Zharkov picked up the puck," Zajac said. "I swung back towards their end looking to just bust towards the net. He made a great pass and I just tried to get it on net as quickly as possible."

The goal was Zajac's second of the season and it was his first-career game-winning tally.

Before Zajac's tally, the Devils had built a 2-1 lead thanks to Whitney and Sislo.

Whitney opened the scoring at 13:20 of the first period with the help of a quick stick in the offensive end by Nathan Perkovich. Matt Corrente had the second helper.

"Coming through the neutral zone, Perkovich made a great play to get the puck forward," Whitney said. "I almost came over to help him out, but he snuck through and found me at the back post."

Both Whitney and Corrente kept their scoring streaks alive. Whitney now has at least one point in each of the last four outings with two goals and three assists. Corrente is on a three-game streak with a goal and three assists.

Mike Sislo gave the Devils a 2-0 advantage with a second- and third-chance effort. Matt Anderson played the puck out of the corner and Sislo followed up on his own and Stephane Veilleux's rebounds. The goal was his team-high tying third of the season, while Anderson earned his fourth assist of the year and Veilleux picked up his fourth point in as many games.

Olivier Fortier made it 2-1 at 8:18 of the second, making way for Zajac's winner.

To make things interesting, Hamilton's Garrett Stafford scored a power-play goal with 2:28 remaining to move the score to 3-2.

Jeff Frazee made 21 saves for his second win of the season. He made seven saves in the first, second and in the third periods and came up big on a breakaway attempt with less than five minutes to play.

The Devils will face the Binghamton Senators for the third time this season when the defending Calder Cup Champions arrive at the Times Union Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
