Holden's OT Winner Gives Falcons 3rd Straight Win

The Springfield Falcons have won three straight games, edging the St. John's IceCaps by a score of 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the MassMutual Center. Danny Taylor way steady in net, denying 38 shots to lift the Falcons to a winning record of 6-5. Defenseman Nick Holden scored the overtime winner for the Falcons earning his second goal of the season.
"It was a huge weekend for us to keep building, especially getting big wins here at home," said Holden.
The Falcons beat the Hershey Bears similarly last night in overtime and Falcons head coach Rob Riley couldn't be happier with the results this weekend. "Winning these last two in overtime at home are pretty impressive character wins for our guys," said Riley. "It's really a confidence booster for our players."
Consistent goaltending has been a huge factor as well says the coach. "Danny (Taylor) have been very very good every game he has played. He's calm in the net, he doesn't lose his composure. He's just been great for us," said Riley.
It was end-to-end hockey in the first period with the Falcons earning a pair of goals to give them a lead over the IceCaps. The Falcons opened the scoring at 8:06 of the period on a power play with Cam Atkinson scoring his third goal of the season for Springfield. St. John's managed to level the score soon after as Jason Jaffray went tumbling into Taylor and the puck found the net at 9:54. Andrew Joudrey reclaimed the lead for the Falcons at 13:51 of the first, scoring his first goal of the season. Left wing Maksim Mayorov collided into the post on a breakaway rush and was helped off the ice with little remaining in the first period. The Falcons ended the frame with a 2-1 lead.
In a scoreless second period, the Falcons killed off an early hooking minor and Taylor posted 18 saves to retain a 2-1 lead for Springfield. At 15:45 of the second frame, Taylor made a last-second lateral move, stopping a shot with his blocker to keep St. John's down a goal going into the final period.
The IceCap's Jaffray stuffed in a rebound at 8:26 of the third period to tie the game at two apiece. The Falcons regained the lead at 16:27 with a goal by Nick Drazenovic, but the IceCaps found a way to force overtime at 19:22 with a goal from Paul Postma.
The Falcons claimed their second overtime win in two nights after David Savard found Holden in front, who put his second goal of the season in off the iron at 2:18 of OT.
The Falcons return to action next Friday night against the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:30 at the MassMutual Center.
