Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators extended their win streak to three games Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena as they defeated the visiting Rochester Americans 3-1.

Jim O'Brien was awarded first star honors after recording the game winning goal in the third period. Mike McKenna started in goal, turning away 33 of 34 shots faced to earn his first victory of the young season.

After both teams failed to generate any offense in the opening half of the game, Pat Cannone found the net at the 11:11 mark of the second period. The forward notched his third goal of the season on a power play off a centering feed from Derek Grant to put the B-Sens ahead 1-0.

The B-Sens had an opportunity to go up by a pair of goals nearly two minutes later. Mark Parrish was awarded a penalty shot after being taken down on a partial breakaway; however Rochester netminder Drew MacIntyre successfully kicked away the Binghamton captain's attempt to keep the Amerks within striking distance.

O'Brien succeeded in doubling Binghamton's lead as he undressed the Rochester defense en route to scoring a shorthanded tally just 2:40 into the third period.

The Amerks would finally get on the board at 8:44 of the third. Phil Varone fired a shot at the Binghamton cage and Corey Tropp was there to poke the rebound past McKenna to cut the B-Sens' lead to 2-1.

The B-Sens answered less than three minutes later. As time expired on a cross-checking minor issued to Mike Hoffman, the Binghamton forward picked up the puck upon exiting the penalty box and went streaking in alone on MacIntyre. Hoffman wristed the puck in stick side to regain the two-goal lead for his club, ultimately securing the B-Sens' second straight win on home ice.

The B-Sens travel to Hershey Sunday where they will face the Bears at 5 p.m. Fans can listen live on "Binghamton's Classic Hits" BIG 107.5 (WBBI-FM) beginning 30 minutes before game time as Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens, hosts the Countdown to Faceoff.
