Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch were defeated 6-2 by the first-place Norfolk Admirals tonight at the War Memorial Arena.

The Norfolk Admirals wasted no time showing how they had collected a league-leading 13 points coming into tonight's contest, exploding for three goals in less than seven minutes.

Norfolk right wing Carter Ashton opened the scoring with 6:47 remaining in the first. Defenseman Charles Landry moved the puck across the crease right on to the stick of Ashton, who was able to slide the puck past Crunch goaltender Jeff Deslauriers.

Two goals in the final two minutes of the period, by Admirals right wing Dana Tyrell and former Crunch center Trevor Smith respectively, sent the Crunch into the locker room chasing a 3-0 deficit at the first intermission.

The second period started the way the first finished, less than two minutes in, Richard Panik scored a power play goal. With the Admirals leading 4-0, head coach Mark Holick replaced Deslauriers with Iiro Tarkki in net.

Momentum shifted in the Crunch's favor when Norfolk's Mark Barberio was called for slashing, immediately followed by Mike Vernace for high-sticking, giving the Crunch 1:03 of 5-on-3 power play time. With Barberio out of the box and just six seconds remaining on the man advantage, center Nathan Smith scored his first of the season to cut Norfolk's lead to 4-1 at the 6:34 mark of the second period.

Things continued to go the Crunch's way in the third period. Mark Bell scored his third goal of the season, assisted by John Mitchell and Brian O'Hanley at the 6:58 mark.

The Crunch's momentum swing was short lived as J.T. Wyman and Barberio added goals in the final frame for a final score of 6-2.

The Crunch take on I-90 rivals the Rochester Americans on Saturday, November 5 for the second of ten meetings this season.
