Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Lansing, MI - Alexander Colome pitched six strong innings and the Cody Rogers helped the Hot Rods break out of their offensive slump to pound the Lansing Lugnuts, 11-5, on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. The win snaps the Hot Rods three-game losing streak and gives them a jump start on their nine-game, ten-day road trip.

After a sluggish offensive series against Dayton, the Hot Rods came out swinging Saturday night. Lead-off hitter Cody Rogers began the slugfest with a solo home run to right field on the second pitch of the game to give the Hot Rods a 1-0 lead. It was his third homer since joining the team on Monday, matching his lead-off home run in his first Hot Rods at-bat.

After a line-out by Tyler Bortnick, Brett Nommensen continued the inning with a single to left field followed by a walk to Ryan Wiegand. That brought up Mark Thomas, who bounced one to shortstop; the Lugnuts retired Wiegand at second, but the relay to first base sailed into the stands to score Nommensen for a 2-0 Hot Rods lead.

Lansing would get a run back in the first inning against Alexander Colome, thanks to the efforts of Kenny Wilson. The outfielder hit an infield single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a balk to cut the lead to 2-1.

From that point on, it was all Hot Rods. After a 1-2-3 second, Lansing starter Dave Sever allowed two more runs in the third. Rogers began the rally with a single, followed by a Bortnick walk. Two outs later, Thomas smashed a double into the left field corner to make it 4-1.

In the fourth, the wheels fell off for Sever. Gabe Cohen singled to right and was then brought home on a towering two-run homer by Kyle Spraker to make it 6-1. Bennett Davis took the next pitch and belted it off the center field wall. The ball skipped away from Wilson, and Davis kept on running, all the way home, for an inside-the-park homer for a 7-1 lead. Sever threw the next pitch behind Rogers and was immediately taken out of the game by Lansing manager Sal Fasano.

Relief pitcher Juan Hernandez didn't fare much better. He hit Rogers before Bortnick popped out for the first out of the inning. That was followed by a walk to Nommensen and then a run-scoring single from Ryan Wiegand for an 8-1 lead. Thomas followed with a base hit to load the bases before Hernandez struck out Dustin Biell for the second out. With the bases still loaded, Cohen came to the plate again and drew a walk to force in another run. Lefty Matt Wright entered the game for Lansing and gave up a run on a single by Kyle Spraker to make it 10-1.

All told in the fourth, the Hot Rods sent 12 men to the plate, scoring six runs on six hits. They had two homers, including their second inside-the-park homer of 2010, both coming in Lansing. Lansing pitching walked two and hit one to help with the scoring.

For good measure, the Hot Rods added a run in the fifth against Wright. Rogers and Bortnick reached to begin the inning before Nommensen bounced into a force out at second base. With runners at the corners, Wiegand stepped up and drove home Rogers with a sac fly to bump the lead to 11-1.

While all the offense was pouring in for Bowling Green, Alexander Colome was stifling the bats of the Lugnuts. After Wilson scored in the first, Colome retired ten straight before a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. He worked around that base hit before giving up another fruitless two-out double in the fifth.

Colome ended up giving up a run in the sixth on a two-out double before retiring the final batter in his outing. He allowed just two runs on five hits over those six innings, striking out six along the way. He improved to 6-5 and didn't walk a batter for just the third time in six starts. Against Lansing he is now 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four starts.

Lansing added another run against Matt Stabelfeld in the seventh before Scott Shuman gave up two runs in the ninth to cut the final margin to 11-5.

Rogers led the Hot Rods offensively, going 3-4 with a home run. He reached base five times and scored four runs, tying the franchise mark set by Isaias Velasquez on July 16 of 2009. Spraker finished the game with two hits and a home run and three RBI. Thomas had two hits and two RBI while Wiegand, coming off an illness, had a hit and drove in two. All told, seven of nine Hot Rods had hits while eight of nine reached base.

The series continues on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM CDT. LHP Kyle Lobstein (5-4, 4.27) takes on RHP Ryan Tepera (7-3, 3.16). You can follow the game on the radio with Tom Gauthier beginning at 12:50 PM on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
