Lara Caps Improbable Comeback
July 10, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAYTON, OH - Down to their final strike in the top of the ninth inning, the Great Lakes Loons rallied from down 2-1 to capture an improbable 4-2 win Saturday night.
Down one run with two outs in the ninth inning and with a 1-2 count, Austin Yount singled home Brian Cavazos-Galvez from third with the game-tying run. One batter later, with pinch runner Stetson Banks at first, Christian Lara ripped a line drive down the right field line. The ball shot off the wall towards center field and away from right fielder Ryan LaMarre and Lara raced around all four bases for an inside-the-park home run.
Cavazos-Galvez began the inning with a sharp single to left-center off closer Kevin Arico. Rafael Ynoa sacrificed him to second and Cavazos-Galvez went to third on an infield ground out by Brian Ruggiano.
Jordan Roberts (3-3) recorded the win after entering the game in a second and third, one out jam and managing to exit unscathed. Steve Ames retired the side striking out two in the ninth for his fourth save.
The win was the Loons third eighth or ninth inning comeback win against the Dragons in their last four matchups. Lara notched the first regular season inside-the-park home run in franchise history.
The ninth inning runs were the Loons' first since the first inning, when Angelo Songco brought home Lara on an infield grounder. Dayton tied the game in the second on an RBI single by Tommy Nurre, and took the lead in the fourth on another Norre RBI single. The second run was unearned following a throwing error on starting pitcher Matt Magill, who surrendered one earned run in 7 1/3 innings.
The Loons improve to 56-29, the best record in full season affiliated Minor League Baseball and a league-best 13-3 in the second half. They continue their series in Dayton Sunday afternoon against the Dragons (37-48, 7-9) beginning at 4pm ET. Right-hander Rubby de la Rosa (2-1, 3.86 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against right-hander J.C. Sulbaran (4-4, 4.50). The game will be broadcast on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
