Chiefs Bullpen Blows Another Quality Start

July 10, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs bullpen blew another outstanding start for Nick Struck to take the loss to the Kane County Cougars 4-3 Friday night at O'Brien Field. For the second night in a row the Chiefs took the lead into the ninth inning but were unable to record the save. The Chiefs fall to 4-10 in the second half and 42-41 on the season. In the bottom half of the second inning the Chiefs were able to put the first run on the scoreboard. Justin Bour drew a lead-off walk and DJ Fitzgerald followed with a walk of his own. After a Matt Cerda strikeout, Jae-Hoon Ha came to the plate and drove in Bour with an RBI single to left field to make the score 1-0 Chiefs. The top of the fifth would be the first real scoring opportunity for Kane County and the Cougars catcher, Juan Nunez, capitalized. Struck had only given up one hit through four and one-third innings when Myrio Richard snuck a hit just inside the right field foul line that found its way to the corner for a double. Struck got the next batter Jason Christian to ground out to second but Richard moved to third on the play. With two outs Nunez singled to right field to score Richard and tie the game at 1-1. With two outs the bottom of the sixth inning Kane County starter Justin Marks was taken out after issuing his third walk of the night to Fitzgerald. Marks had only given up one run on two hits both of which were to Ha. He also struck out 10 Chiefs through his five and two-third innings pitched. A.J. Huttenlocker came in to get the final out of the inning. A wild pitch by the reliever moved Fitzgerald to second. Cerda came through with an RBI single to center field to make the score 2-1. Ronny Morla took the mound in relief of Struck in the seventh inning. A walk, an error on Chiefs third baseman Charles Thomas, and eventually another walk loaded the bases for the Cougars. Morla was able to get out of the jam with no harm done on an inning ending groundball to Cerda at second base and the score stayed 2-1. Corey Martin made his first appearance as a Chief since April 29 after being sent down to Short Season-A Boise. Rashun Dixon started the inning with a single, Mike Gilmartin doubled to right, and pinch hitter Jose Crisotomo slapped an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. After a fielders' choice that got an out at the plate, Nunez was going to be intentionally walked but Martin threw a wild pitch to his standing catcher Luis Flores that allowed Crisotomo to score from third for the go-ahead run. The final run of the inning scored on a Leonardo Gil RBI single to centerfield to make the score 4-2. The Chiefs were able to make things interesting in the bottom of the ninth with Fitzgerald leading off drawing his fourth walk of the night. Cerda followed with a walk of his own and the Chiefs had two runners on with no outs. Ha grounded out to short, but was able to move the base runners to second and third. Jose Guzman relieved Bo Schultz and Flores got an RBI on a ground out to the short stop that plated Fitzgerald and cut the deficit to 4-3. With two outs Nelson Perez stepped to the plate to pinch-hit for Charles Thomas but he grounded out to second base to end the game and keep the final score at 4-3. Struck pitched six one run innings while giving up four hits, striking out two, and had a throwing error on a pick-off attempt. Morla (H, 6) pitched two scoreless innings and did not give up a hit. He also struck out one and walked two. Corey Martin (BS, 1)(L, 1-2) pitched one inning giving up three runs on five hits while striking out one.
