Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - In a tale of two pitching teams, the Lansing Lugnuts won the battle Friday night, handing the Great Lakes Loons their third shutout of the season in front a sell-out crowd of 6,015 at Dow Diamond.

The Loons entered the game as the Midwest League's best offense team with a collective batting average of .272, but the Lugnuts used two men, lefty Egan Smith (2-0, 2.57) and Nestor Molina, to hold the Loons scoreless on seven strikeouts to one walk. The Loons totaled eight hits, but only once did the team have a multi-hit inning.

On the opposite side, the Loons pitching crew gave up six runs on 10 hits with a season-high 12 walks. Starting for Loons was Allen Webster, who entered the game on an 11-inning scoreless streak, which was quickly lost in the first inning. With one out and a man on first, Webster issued his first of eight walks. One out and one walk later, Lansing's catcher A.J. Jimenez hit a single through the gap at second to score two runs.

In the fourth with two outs, Webster walked two batters to set up an RBI-single by Sean Ochinko, who was activated from the DL earlier in the day, making it 3-0. Webster allowed one final walk to Eric Eiland to load the bases and end his night. He finished as the game's losing pitcher, having allowed three runs on four hits over 3.2 innings.

Left-handed reliever Andy Suiter took over for Webster, with the bases loaded, and got the Loons out the fourth-inning jam with a timely strikeout. The 23-year-old provided the Loons best innings defensively, holding Lansing to one hit over 3.1 innings. Suiter was relieved by Edwin Contreras at the start of the eighth inning.

In the ninth, Lansing cemented the win by scoring three runs. The Lugnuts put a runner on first and second via two leadoff singles, and then with Jimenez batting, Ochinko stole third. Contreras then tossed a wild pitch to score Ochinko and move Eiland to second. A single from Justin Jackson loaded the bases and Kenny Wilson struck the final blow--a grounder up the middle for two runs.
