Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - The Great Lakes Loons scored three runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the Dayton Dragons 4-2 on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons loss snapped their six-game winning streak and was the Loons' 10th win in their last 11 games. The season's largest crowd of 9,496 attended the game, just 62 short of the all-time franchise record.
The Dragons took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning and brought on their closer, Kevin Arico. Brian Cavazos-Galvez started the ninth with a single to center field, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third on a ground out to the pitcher. But Austin Yount, who entered the game batting .097, singled to center field to bring in the tying run. Christian Lara followed with a liner into the right field corner. Dragons right fielder Ryan LaMarre raced into the corner, hoping to prevent Yount from scoring, but the ball took an unusual bounce and skipped past LaMarre. But the time he could retrieve the ball, Lara had circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run to make it 4-2. The Dragons were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Great Lakes scored one run in the top of the first inning before the Dragons tied it in the second. Dayton's Mark Fleury, who had walked to start the inning, scored from second on a single by Tommy Nurre to make it 1-1.
The Dragons took the lead in the fourth when Ryan LaMarre walked with one out, went to second on a wild pick-off throw, and scored on a two-out single by Nurre to make it 2-1.
Dragons starting pitcher Tim Crabbe was outstanding. He worked six and one-third innings, allowing five hits and one run with three walks and four strikeouts. Jamie Walczak relieved Crabbe and worked one and two-thirds scoreless innings. Arico took the loss, allowing three runs in his only inning of work.
The Dragons finished with five hits. Nurre was 2 for 4 with two RBI. Didi Gregorius also had two hits.
The Dragons have held the lead in the eighth or ninth inning in four of their nine second half losses. They were tied in the ninth in another game.
The Dragons (7-9) host Great Lakes (13-3) at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Fifth Third Field. J.C. Sulbaran (4-4, 4.50) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Rubby De La Rosa (2-1, 3.86). The series concludes Monday at 7:00 p.m.
