Chiefs RBI Leader Promoted to Daytona
July 10, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs and Chicago Cubs have announced that infielder/outfielder Greg Rohan who leads the Chiefs in RBI and extra-base hits has been promoted to the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League. Taking his place on the roster for the three-game series in Cedar Rapids will be Jonathon Mota who returns to the Chiefs two weeks after going to Daytona.
Rohan leaves with 53 RBI, second most in the Midwest League, and a team-high 25 extra-base hits. He had a nine-game hit streak snapped Friday night in his final Chiefs game to drop his average below .300 to .298. Rohan also leaves as the Chiefs team leader in total bases (125), doubles (17) and hits (87). He is second on the roster in home runs (5), slugging percentage (.428) and at-bats (292) while also ranking in the top four in triples (3), runs scored (40) and on-base percentage (.354). A 21st round pick in 2009 out of Kent State University, Rohan proved to be one of the most versatile Chiefs this season with 23 starts in left field, 21 starts at third base, 13 starts at first base and eight starts as the designated hitter. In the 14 games since the All-Star break, Rohan hit .370 with 11 RBI and a home run. He led the team hitting .333 with runners in scoring position and .302 with two outs and runners at second or third. Rohan hit either third or fourth in all but three of his starts this season and his departure leaves a big hole in an already struggling lineup.
Mota returns to the Chiefs 13 days after a promotion to Daytona. In those 13 days he appeared in just one game for the Cubs and that was as a designated hitter on July 1 at Tampa. He was 0-for-6 with five strikeouts while playing behind former Chiefs catchers Michael Brenly and Mark Reed. The first time around with the Chiefs this season Mota hit .265 with a homer and 17 RBI in 32 games. He started behind the plate in 30 games and also played third base twice. With two catchers currently on the Chiefs roster it is unclear where Mota will play, but during his career he has appeared at every position except for center field. Mota hit .238 last season with Double-A Tennessee while scoring 32 runs in 107 games. As a utility infielder he doubled 16 times with two triples, two homers and 22 RBI. Mota spent parts of the 2007, 2007 and 2008 seasons with the Chiefs appearing in 107 total games. In 2006 he hit .275 in 33 games with Peoria collecting nine RBI and three extra-base hits. He returned to the Chiefs in 2007 hitting .277 in 67 games with two homers, 17 doubles and 35 runs scored. In 2008 Mota began the season with the Chiefs and was promoted after hitting .227 in seven games with two doubles.
Even with the addition of Mota, the Chiefs head to Cedar Rapids with just 24 players as shortstop Hak-Ju Lee heads to Anaheim for the 12th Annual XM Futures Game. Lee will miss all three games in Cedar Rapids and be back for the Chiefs homestand which begins on Wednesday, July 14.
