Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps fell victim to a late rally by the South Bend Silver Hawks in a 6-4 loss Saturday at Parkview Field. Jon Alia doubled and drove in a pair for Fort Wayne.
While a pair of South Bend relievers fired a hitless 3.1 innings, the TinCaps bullpen yielded five runs in four innings of work. TinCaps LHP Mike Watt had a good start spoiled as he tied a career high with nine strikeouts in five strong innings.
The Silver Hawks took the lead in the second as Ramon Castillo led off with a double. Two batters later, Matt Helm singled to center to make it 1-0.
The TinCaps responded in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Alia beat out a potential double-play ball for an RBI fielder's choice. Rico Noel was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Danny Payne drew a run-scoring walk to give Fort Wayne a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, David Nick led off with a single and stole second. Matt Davidson's infield single chased Nick home to tie the game. Three batters later, Helm reached on an infield single to give South Bend a 3-2 lead.
The TinCaps again came back in the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Meeley stroked a two-out RBI single to right as Freiman scored from second base on a bang-bang play at the plate. Alia followed with an RBI double into the left-field corner to put the TinCaps back on top, 4-3.
South Bend tied it in the seventh on Bobby Borchering's two-out RBI single.
In the ninth, the Silver Hawks loaded the bases with two outs, then Davidson banged a two-run double to the left-field wall to give South Bend a 6-4 lead. The TinCaps went in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Silver Hawks RHP Chris Odegaard (4-0) stayed perfect as he picked up the win; Fort Wayne RHP Nick Schumacher (2-5) took the loss. RHP Brian Budrow converted his first save of the year.
Fort Wayne fell to 8-8 in the half, 44-42 for the season. South Bend upped its record to 7-9 in the second half, 37-47 for the year.
The TinCaps continue the three-game series against the Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) Sunday at 3:05 p.m. at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula (4-2) gets the starting nod against Silver Hawks RHP Scottie Allen (3-2).
