Sioux City Explorers News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA -- The Sioux City Explorers today signed former Houston Astro and Seattle Mariner outfielder Charlton Jimerson to an American Association contract. Jimerson had been released by the Seattle organization after playing this season with AAA Tacoma, hitting .233 with 11 HR, 31 RBI and 14 stolen bases.

Jimerson brings some pretty impressive credentials and numbers to an already deep Explorer line-up. Last season in the Seattle Mariners organization, Jimerson hit .276 with 23 HR and 73 RBI, all season highs, plus stole 30 bases for AA West Tennessee of the Southern League, and was named to the league All-Star team. The OF played in 17 games for AAA Tacoma, batting .308 with 2 HR, 7 RBI and 5 SB and received a promotion to Seattle. With the Mariners, Jimerson appeared in 11 games, going 2-2, scoring 5 runs, stealing 2 bases, and hit a HR.

The Houston Astros orginally drafted the San Leandro, California native in the 5th round of the 2001 amateur draft and Jimerson hit 87 HR and stole 170 bases in 6 years in the Astro farm chain before earning a promotion to the major leagues in 2006. Jimerson hit .333 in 17 games with the Astros; he hit 1 HR and stole 2 bases. Jimerson was drafted by the Astros in 1997 out of Mt. Eden High School in California, but elected to attend the Unviersity of Miami (FL) on a academic scholarship.

Jimerson walked on with the Hurricane baseball team and legendary Coach Jim Morris and, as a senior, led Miami to a national title at the College World Series in 2001, beating Stanford 12-1 in the championship game. Jimerson was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Miami also won the national title in 1999 but Jimerson did not play for the 'Canes in the tournament. Jimerson graduated from Miami with a degree in computer science.

Jimerson currently resides in Missouri City, Texas and is expected to be in the line-up for tonight's game with the El Paso Diablos. The signing gives the Explorers a full compliment of 4 veterans on the roster, with a total of 21 players.
