Young, Mata are League's Best of the Week

DURHAM, NC - Sioux City Explorers INF Walter Young and Wichita Wingnuts RHP Gustavo Mata were selected by the official statistician of the American Association, PA-Sportsticker, as the Teamline Direct Batter and Pitcher of the Week.

Young batted .474 with two home runs and eight RBI in five games for the first place Explorers. He scored two runs to go along with nine hits, a .842 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .522. In the 7-4 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs this past Thursday, the 28-year-old went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three runs batted in. With Sioux City, Young is batting .481 with three home runs and 17 RBI.

The Purvis, MS resident was a 31st round selection of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1999. He spent five seasons in the Pirates farm system from 1999-2003. Young has also played in the Baltimore Orioles (reaching the majors in 2005), San Diego Padres and Houston Astros organizations.

Mata hurled a complete game shutout in the 7-0 win over the St. Paul Saints in game one of the doubleheader from Thursday night. He allowed no walks and four hits while striking out five batters. Mata is 4-6 on the year with a 4.26 ERA in 76 innings pitched.

The Venezuelan native was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos in 2000.
