Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts are proud to announce that RHP Gustavo Mata has been named the American Association Pitcher of the Week. Mata receives the honor after pitching the first complete game shutout in Wingnuts' history in the first game of a double header vs. St. Paul on July 30th. Mata blanked the Saints on just four base hits, while walking none and striking out a season-high five. During his seven innings of work, the Carupano, VZ native never allowed a Saints player to reach second base. As the Wingnuts battled for first place throughout the first half of the season, Mata went 2-0 against the eventual division-winning Sioux Falls Canaries.

This marks the second consecutive week a Wingnuts' player has earned league recognition. OF/LHP Blake Gailen won Batter of the Week seven days ago.

After three days off with the 74th annual NBC World Series taking place in Wichita, the Wingnuts return to action tonight in Lincoln, opening a three-game series against the Saltdogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Wingnuts are expected to send Kevin Cheppenko to the mound.

The Wingnuts return to Wichita for their final homestand on August 17th vs. Sioux Falls. For Wingnuts and NBC tickets, call the Wichita Pro Sports office at (316) 264-4625
