Explorers pound El Paso 12-2

SIOUX CITY, IA -- Cameron Cheek went 7 strong innings for the Sioux City Explorers and the offense gave the righty plenty of help, scoring 6 runs in the first inning and the X's cruised to a 12-2 win over El Paso at Lewis & Clark Park Monday night.

Cheek was magnificent, going 7 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 6 hits. Cheek walked 2 and struck out a career high 9, improving to 4-2 on the year. A year ago, Cheek went 7 strong innings, beating the Diablos.

Sioux City pounded Diablos starter Jusef Frias, scoring 6 runs in the opening inning, all coming with 2 outs. With Jason Tuttle on 2nd with a double, Walter Young hit a 2 run HR over the wall in center. Alex Llanos followed with a single and Chris Grossman walked. Juan Camacho drilled a RBI single and Chad Gabriel followed with a RBI infield hit. Nick McCoola kept up the hit barrage with a 2 run double to right and the X's had a 6-0 lead.

El Paso scored their 2 runs in the top of the 2nd on a 2 run single by Bryan Cooksey. In the 4th, 2 wild pitchs scored Camacho to make it 7-2 and then X's blew it open with 4 runs in the 4th. Young got a 1 out walk and then Llanos doubled to left. After Grossman bounced out to the drawn in infield, Camacho was walked intentionally to fill the bases for Gabriel. The left fielder drilled a bases clearing triple down the line in right and Gabriel would score on a RBI single by Dustin Jones.

Frias would allow 11 of those 12 runs, all earned, on 9 hits, walking 6 in 3 2/3 innings. His ERA climbed a full run from 4.14 to 5.19 and fell to 5-6.

Gabriel finished 2-4 with 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Young's HR was his 4th of the season and the first baseman now has 19 RBI in 8 games. Llanos went 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Camacho went 2-4 with 3 runs scored and a RBI. McCoola went 2-2 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 walks.

Sioux City and El Paso now has a rubber match on Tuesday night and the X's will send Alexander Francisco (9-1) to the hill while the Diablos will counter with lefty Adam Blackely (6-7). Game time is 7:05 with tickets available by calling 277-WINS.
