Diablos blasted by Cheek, Explorers

Cameron Cheek threw seven solid innings as the Sioux City Explorers dominated the El Paso Diablos in a 12-2 defeat on Monday night.

The Explorers went on a tear in the bottom of the first inning. The X's scored six runs off of six hits in the frame. Walter Young had a two-run homer and Nick McCoola ripped a two-run double in the frame as Sioux City took a 6-0 lead.

El Paso battled back in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded Bryan Cooksey lined a two-run single into center field, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

The Explorers built a five-run lead in the bottom of the third inning. Juan Camacho had a lead off single and he would score on a wild pitch for the 7-2 advantage. Sioux City blew the game out of reach with a four run bottom of the fourth inning. Chad Gabriel capped off the barrage with a bases clearing triple to 11-2.

Cameron Cheek (4-2) is the winner. He threw seven innings allowing two runs off of six hits with a season high nine strikeouts and two walks.

Jusef Frias (5-6) takes the loss. He threw three and two thirds innings allowing 11 runs off of nine hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

The Diablos and Explorers will close out their three game series on Tuesday night at 6:05 PM MST. Adam Blackley will face off against Alexander Francisco in the contest for the Explorers. The game will be carried live on ESPN Radio 1380 AM as well as at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
