Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

St. Paul, MN - Kris Regas tied an American Association and Canaries Franchise record with his 23rd save of the season as the Sioux Falls Canaries (16-14) held on for a 9-5 win over the St. Paul Saints (14-17) on Monday night in St. Paul. The win extended the Canaries winning streak to a season-high six victories.

Kennard Bibbs started the game with a home run to right-field on the game's second pitch. Bibbs second home run of the season gave the Canaries an early 1-0 lead.

The Canaries extended their lead in the third inning. Tim Hutting walked and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Alex Bardeguez followed with a groundball that was misplayed by Saints first baseman Tim Brown. Brown's error put runners on the corners for Bibbs. Bibbs singled to score Hutting and the Canaries took a 2-0 lead. Grant Richardson followed with a double to bring in both Bardeguez and Bibbs. Richardson later scored on a double by Beau Torbert, and after two and a half innings the Canaries led by five, 5-0.

St. Paul got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. Heath Keel hit his ninth home run of the season to make it 5-1. Keel was the 383rd batter this season to face Canaries starter Travis Kane, and just the first to homer off of him.

The Birds pulled even further away with four runs in the top of the eighth. Torbert started the inning with a single, and Ben Van Iderstine followed with an RBI triple to put the Canaries back up by five, 6-1. Patrick Reilly singled to score Van Iderstine for a 7-1 Canaries advantage. Paul Smyth singled to send Reilly to third, and Tim Hutting singled to score Reilly for an 8-1 lead. Smyth finished the Birds eighth inning scoring when he came home on a sacrifice fly by Kennard Bibbs, and the Canaries led, 9-1.

The Saints did not go quietly into the night. In the eighth inning, Pichi Balet singled and Brent Krause homered for the 13th time this season to pull the Saints within six, 9-3. In the ninth inning the bases were loaded on three walks, and Kevin Sullivan came up with a bases loaded single to get the Saints within four, 9-5. With the tying run on deck, Regas came in to get the game's final out for the record-tying save.

Travis Kane (9-5) pitched 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on 11 hits, to pick up his ninth win of the season. Charlie Ruud (11-3) gave up five runs, four earned, in six innings to suffer the loss.

The Canaries go for the sweep of St. Paul on Tuesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Birds are back at Sioux Falls Stadium to open a three-game series against the Lincoln Saltdogs with "Parrot Heads & Pirates Night" on Thursday, August 7.
