Hartford Yard Goats News Release
HARTFORD - Jack Wynkoop became the first Hartford Yard Goat in team history to pitch a nine-inning, complete game shutout, spinning a 4-0, four-hitter over the Bowie Baysox Wednesday night, before a capacity crowd of 6,850. (It was the 23rd sellout of the season. The Yard Goats have drawn 227,089 to Dunkin' Donuts Park so far in 2019.) The veteran left-hander, who has started more games than any Yard Goat pitcher (57), allowed only four hits, did not surrender a walk and struck out five. He threw 101 pitches and needed just 2:02 to polish off the Orioles affiliate, as Hartford salvaged the finale of a three-game series.
Wynkoop retired the first eight batters he faced and allowed Bowie just one hit in the first four innings, before escaping a bases loaded jam in the fifth. He retired 12 straight before yielding a two-out single in the ninth, then got a ground out to third to complete his gem.
The Yard Goats scored the only run they needed in the third inning, when Vance Vizcaino tripled and Arvicent Perez knocked him in with a two-out single to right. Tyler Nevin's single, a sacrifice and a RBI-double by Mylz Jones made it 2-0 in the seventh inning. Hartford tacked on two more runs in the eighth, when Manny Melendez doubled and scored on a two-base throwing error by third baseman Rylan Bannon on a Colton Welker ground ball. Welker eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Perez went 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace Hartford's 10-hit attack. Nevin and Melendez each added two hits.
Mike Baumann, making his first-ever start for Bowie, turned in a quality start, pitching six innings of one-run baseball. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five.
Hartford opens a four-game series at Trenton Thursday, the 4th of July, at 7:05 PM, before breaking three days for the Eastern League All-Star game. RHP Brandon Gold will pitch for the Yard Goats, while RHP Rony Garcia draws the starting assignment for the Yankees affiliate. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410 AM, on 100.9 FM and on the Internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com and on MiLB.com. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park, Thursday, July 11 at 7:05 PM, hosting the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
