Trenton Thunder News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Thunder committed a season-high four errors in a 9-2 defeat to the Portland Sea Dogs on Wednesday night in front of 7,368 fans at Hadlock Field.
The Sea Dogs took advantage of two Thunder errors in the bottom of the first inning to plate two runs off Garrett Whitlock. Jarren Duran began the inning with a single, promptly stole second base and advanced to third when Kellin Deglan's throw sailed into center field. After the first of five strikeouts for Whitlock on the night, Bobby Dalbec reached on an error by Mandy Alvarez and Luke Tendler cashed in the first run with a double to right. A balk by the Thunder starter put the Sea Dogs ahead 2-0.
Portland stretched their lead to 4-0 with an opposite field two-run home run by Bobby Dalbec in the third inning.
The Thunder cut the deficit in half against Denyi Reyes when Ben Ruta singled to begin the fourth inning and Mandy Alvarez sent a 1-0 offering over the wall in right field for his sixth home run of the season.
The Sea Dogs put the game away with five runs in the fifth inning, an inning in which they again took advantage of two Thunder errors. A throwing error by Mandy Alvarez led to the first run of the inning and Luke Tendler reached on an error by Gosuke Katoh later in the frame to open the door for the Sea Dogs to pull away. Brett Netzer singled in a run and Jeremy Rivera buried a triple into the right field corner to make it 9-2 after five innings.
Whitlock, who saw his season record even at 3-3, went five innings in Wednesday's defeat. The right-hander allowed a career-high nine runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk.
Brady Lail fired three scoreless innings of relief after Whitlock scattering three baserunners with three strikeouts.
Denyi Reyes spun seven innings of two-run ball to earn his third win of the season. Reyes struck out just one batter in his outing before giving way to Durban Feltman and Matthew Gorst for scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
