THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia edged Hagerstown 6-2 on Saturday evening. The Power took a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Suns responded with a pair to lead 2-1 after two innings. Elvis Escobar doubled in Jerrick Suiter in the top of the third to tie the game. In the sixth, Francisco Diaz tripled in the go-ahead run. The Power added a run in the seventh on a double by Michael Suchy and plated two more in the eighth on Escobar's solo home run and a RBI ground out. Yeudy Garcia pitched five innings for his ninth win and was followed by John Sever and Julio Vivas, who combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Luis Torres allowed the final four Power runs and took the loss.
ONE FROM TWO: Yeudy Garcia is one victory away from joining Austin Coley with double-digits wins. Prior to this season, only Will Inman, Evan Anundsen and Rudy Owens reached ten-plus wins over the course of their respective seasons with West Virginia. Garcia is slated to start game two of the next Power homestand, set for Friday evening against Lakewood.
ALL SQUARED UP: West Virginia and Hagerstown continue their final series of the season against each other today at Municipal Stadium. The season-set is tied at seven wins apiece with three games left to play, while the Suns lead the all-time series 80-68. The Power have not beaten the Suns in any season series during the Pirates-affiliated era, having last won a season match-up 7-4 in 2008. West Virginia is 31-46 all-time at Municipal Stadium in regular season play.
MCRAE TODAY: Alex McRae makes his 19th start of the season and fourth against Hagerstown when he toes the rubber this afternoon. The right-hander is 0-3 with an 11.25 earned run average against the Suns and 4-3 against the rest of the league with a 3.65 ERA.
YARD WORK: Elvis Escobar's eighth inning home run was his fourth of the season and set a new career-high for home runs in one year. The outfielder hit three in 2014, including two with West Virginia. The long ball Saturday was high second off Suns pitching this month, having gone yard in game two of a doubleheader on July 15 off Mario Sanchez.
SUCCESS RATE: Yeudy Garcia is now 3-0 against Hagerstown this season with a 1.29 earned run average over five games, including three starts.
DOUBLING DOWN: On Thursday, Jordan Luplow became the first Power player in over a year to double three times in a single game. Edwin Espinal was the last player to hit three two-baggers in a game, accomplishing the feat in game two of a doubleheader at Kannapolis on April 29, 2014. Prior to Espinal, the last player to double three times in a game was Gregory Polanco on a five-hit night during the 2012 season.
PROMO UPDATE - JULY 30: West Virginia will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future with a theme night dedicated to the film and series. Fans can enjoy a postgame concert by Mighty McFly as part of the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and the players will be wearing Back to the Future-themed jerseys to be auctioned off with all proceeds to benefit the research of Parkinson's Disease.
POWER POINTS: Austin Coley is one victory shy of matching the franchise record for wins in a single season. Evan Anundsen won 12 times during the 2008 campaign... Nick Neumann is now three saves away from passing Nathan Kilcrease's franchise mark of 15 during the 2012 season... Yhonathan Barrios was traded on Thursday along with cash considerations to the Milwaukee Brewers for infielder Aramis Ramirez... The Power failed to lay down a sac bunt on Saturday and lead the Asheville Tourists by one for the most of any professional team.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost a 9-3 final to Washington. A.J. Burnett took the loss after allowing five runs... Indianapolis lost 4-2 to Louisville in ten innings. Brennan Boesch drove in two in the top of the tenth to push the bats ahead... Altoona was pelted 9-1 by Akron with Jason Creasy surrendering seven runs on six hits over three innings... Bradenton's action was rained out against Dunedin. Friday's suspended game ended in a 1-1 tie and Saturday's game was canceled... The Black Bears shutout Staten Island 3-0.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App.
