LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws battled back from two deficits and after not getting their first hit until the sixth inning, came back to win their third straight game, topping Kannapolis 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park.
Lakewood, winners of three straight games, has now won 13 of their last 17 games and they improved to 19-11/52-46 while Kannapolis fell to 15-15/50-49.
The BlueClaws tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Scott Kingery against Kelvis Valerio, before taking the lead when Chase Harris scored on a wild pitch. After Kyle Martin grounded out, Damek Tomscha's RBI double extended the BlueClaws lead to 5-3 as Valerio came out of the game.
Will Morris, who gave up three runs in seven innings, improved to 3-0 in four starts since re-joining the BlueClaws on July 6th. Scott Harris threw a scoreless eighth and Matt Hockenberry a scoreless ninth for his 10th save. The BlueClaws bullpen has allowed just 10 earned runs in their last 47.2 innings dating to July 10th.
Tomscha went 2-4 and drove in two while Kingery went 2-4 and scored twice for the BlueClaws.
Kannapolis got on the board in the third inning when Cody Daily, who doubled, scored on a throwing error by BlueClaws catcher Deivi Grullon. The Intimidators added to their lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Mason Robbins to go up 2-0 before the BlueClaws battled back.
After not getting a hit over the first five innings, Lakewood tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth off starter Thad Lowry - an RBI single by Damek Tomscha and a fielders choice groundout by Cord Sandberg. Kannapolis re-took the lead on a home run by Cody Daily (first) before the BlueClaws rallied to win.
The series with Kannapolis continues on Monday night. RHP Tyler Viza (4-5) starts for Lakewood against RHP Luis Martinez (3-9) at 7:05 pm.
