Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (14-16, 49-49) used a six-run fifth inning on Sunday afternoon to down the West Virginia Power (20-10, 57-42) by a final of 8-4. The win evens up the four-game series at a game apiece, and gives Hagerstown the edge in the season series 8-7.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Hagerstown managed to send nine batters to the plate in the frame. Center fielder Dale Carey led off by drawing a walk, and the next hitter, 3B David Masters, got hit by a pitch. Right fielder Wilman Rodriguez then sent a line drive single to right, driving in Carey to even the score at 1-1. Another single, by DH Conor Keniry, brought Masters home from third, while Rodriguez also scored from second on the play as RF Michael Suchy bobbled the ball after he got to it. Later in the inning 2B Bryan Mejia drove in a run with a single to right, and the final two runs of the frame come home on a blast over the left field wall by Catcher Raudy Read, his third homerun of the season.

The Power were able to respond quickly with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth. With two on and none out DH Jordan Luplow hit a line drive double to left, driving in both runners to make it 6-3. Luplow eventually crossed the plate thanks to a single to left by Suchy to bring West Virginia within two.

However, that's as close as the Power would get the rest of the way, and the Suns were able to widen their lead in the seventh. With a runner on first and two outs 1B Jose Marmolejos hit a moonshot over the left field wall for his eighth homerun of the season. He is now tied with Carey for the team lead in long balls, and has a team-leading 56 RBI.

The Power had taken their initial 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Jerrick Suiter hit a one-out single to right, and 2B Pablo Reyes followed with a line drive double into center field, scoring Suiter for the first run of the ball game. It was Reyes' 16th double of the season, and was one of 10 hits for West Virginia in the game.

Starting RHP Luis Reyes (5-6) earned the win for Hagerstown. He threw five plus innings and allowed four earned runs on six hits while striking out two. Starting RHP Alex McRae (4-7) suffered the loss for the Power and fell to 0-4 against the Suns this season. He allowed four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 innings of work.

These teams will continue their series at Municipal Stadium with game three on Monday July 27. The Suns will send RHP Justin Amlung (2-0) to the mound for his first start and 12th appearance this season. He will square off against RHP Colten Brewer (2-8) for West Virginia. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. For tickets call 301-791-6266 or go to www.hagerstownsuns.com.
