Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds lost in extra innings on Sunday evening, 5-4 to the Augusta GreenJackets. Delmarva suffered another bad break as a potential go-ahead home run in the ninth inning was appealed, and Elier Leyva was called out for missing home plate.
Augusta established an early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning on RBI singles by Skylar Ewing and Dylan Davis. Dariel Delgado did not allow any more runs in the spot start, finishing five innings for Delmarva.
In the third inning, Delmarva cut into the GreenJackets' early lead. After a single by Ronarsy Ledesma, Guillermo Salas punched an RBI double down the right field line.
The GreenJackets added to their lead in the seventh inning. A two-out rally off reliever Ivan Hernandez was capped by a two-run triple by Will Callaway.
In the eighth, Delmarva began their comeback bid with two runs. Ledesma collected an RBI on a ground out, and then Ademar Rifaela flared an RBI double down the left field line.
The comeback was complete in the ninth inning, though not without controversy. Down to their final strike on multiple occasions, Delmarva stayed alive with a single by Jomar Reyes. Elier Leyva crushed a two-run home run to briefly take a 5-4 lead. However, Augusta appealed and Leyva was ruled out for missing home plate. So the game continued in a 4-4 tie with Leyva officially hitting an RBI triple.
Caleb Kellogg struck out Johneshwy Fargas to force extra innings. However, Augusta had better luck in the tenth inning. A leadoff single by Will Callaway put reliever Max Schuh behind the eight ball. After a walk and groundout, the winning run was on third base. With the infield drawn in, Dylan Davis rolled the game-winning single up the middle for the 5-4 final.
The Shorebirds will try to snap their three-game losing streak on Monday evening. Right-hander Josh Walker (5-2, 2.96) starts for Delmarva against Augusta right-hander Sam Coonrod (6-3, 2.45). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
