July 26, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hickory Crawdads News Release
Lexington, KY- For a second consecutive night, Hickory used a three run ninth inning to claim victory on the road. Trailing 5-0 early, the Crawdads plated six unanswered runs across the contest's final seven frames to defeat the Lexington Legends 6-5 in game one of their four game South Atlantic League series.
Lead-off man Jose Cardona provided the late inning heroics. With the Crawdads trailing 5-3 and down to their final strike, Cardona delivered a bases clearing three-run double. Jairo Beras ignited the rally with a one-out single into left-field off reliever Torey Deshazier. After Jonathan Meyer followed with the same, Juremi Profar hit a hard line drive right to Lexington second baseman Corey Toups which nearly ended the Crawdads night. Meyer was just able to lunge back to first base in time to prevent the double play, keeping the game alive.
With two aboard and two out, Hickory's ninth spot in the order was due up. Crawdads skipper Corey Ragsdale turned to pinch-hitter Jose Trevino. The All-Star backstop walked on four straight pitches, setting up the decisive showdown between hard throwing lefty Brennan Henry (BS, 1)(L, 1-3) and Cardona. Henry worked ahead in the count 1-2, forcing Cardona to foul off several pitches before splitting the left center field gap with the eventual game winner.
Cardona ended the night just 1-for-5, yet drove in four of Hickory's six runs. The outfielder followed up Chuck Moorman's RBI groundout in the third inning with one of his own to cut the Legends lead to 5-2 at the time. He was also denied another potential hit leading off the eighth inning when Alexis Rivera's diving grab delayed his ultimate impact.
Lexington's five run bottom of the second inning set the tone for the game, which the home team controlled into the final inning. The Legends received five solid innings from starter Scott Blewett and were led by Alexis Rivera. In addition to the night's marquee defensive play, Rivera provided a two-run triple which stood as the loudest hit of the the club's only run scoring frame.
Crawdads starter Collin Wiles settled in thereafter, allowing Legends batters only two additional hits in the remainder of his six full innings. Lexington would leave just three runners on base in the game, compared to the five stranded by Hickory across the middle innings.
Solid work out of the bullpen by the righty-lefty combination of Chris Dula and Shane McCain (W, 1-1), coupled with Carlos Arroyo's eighth inning double and run scored set the stage for the dramatic ninth. Once the Crawdads took their first lead of the night, McCain followed with a second straight 1-2-3 inning to pick up his first win of the season with Hickory.
Saturday's victory places Hickory above .500 in the second half at (15-14). The Crawdads (59-38) and Legends (44-52) continue the series tomorrow with Sunday evening's first pitch set to be delivered at 6:05 p.m.
