Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: Sunday evening the Augusta GreenJackets put their six game winning streak on the line in game two against the Delmarva Shorebirds. RHP Michael Santos, who rejoined the GreenJackets early last week on the road, got the nod to make his first home start of the 2015 season. After the GreenJackets let a three run lead slip away, Dylan Davis hits in the winning RBI in the bottom of the tenth inning for the GreenJackets walk-off win.
Back to back RBI singles by Skyler Ewing and Dlyan Davis gave the GreenJackets an early two run lead in the first inning. This homestand has been good to outfield Dylan Davis at the plate. With his RBI single in his first at bat, Davis extended his hitting streak to four games.
In the top of the third inning the Shorebirds were able to cut the GreenJackets lead in half with a run of their own. Guillermo Salsa doubled down the right field line to score Ronarsy Ledesma from first base. The back-to-back hits in the top of the third inning were the only two hits starting pitcher Michael Santos gave up to the Shorebirds during his five innings of work. Santos a top prospect in the Giants organization lived up to the expectations today on the hill.
In the top of the seventh inning the GreenJackets added two insurance runs when Will Callaway hit his fourth triple of the year to score Evan Potter and Johneshwy Fargas. The insurance runs would come in handy for the GreenJackets in the later innings.
In the top of the eighth inning the Shorebirds scored two runs to bring the GreenJackets lead to just one run. After a GreenJackets side was retired in the bottom of the eighth inning, it was up to GreenJackets pitcher Carlos Diaz to close the door. In the top of the ninth inning with two outs, Jomar Reyes singled to right field to keep the Shorebirds alive in the game. Next batter Elier Leyva hit what thought to be a two run home run to take the lead in the top of ninth inning. As Leyva finished out his home run trot, he forgot to touch home plate. Home plate umpire Justin Robinson saw the play and promptly called out Leyva. In the scoreboard it was ruled a triple with an RBI credited to Leyva, with him being at home. Most importantly it took a run of the board for the Shorebirds and the game reminded tied at four runs apiece.
In the bottom of the ninth inning the GreenJackets failed to score and the game was sent to extra innings. Carlos Diaz remained in the game for the tenth inning and retired the side of the Shorebirds. The bottom half of the tenth Will Callaway collected his third hit of the game as he led off with a lead off single. Next batter, Chuckie Jones drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Skyer Ewing then moved both runners into scoring position by hitting a ground ball to the right side of the field, this set up Dylan Davis to be the Sunday evening hero. In a two-one count, Davis ripped a curving line drive to center field to allow Callaway to score the winning run. Davis was met half way to second base by his teammates jumping for joy.
Tonight's final scoreboard line would read four runs, six hits, and zero errors for the Delmarva Shorebirds and five runs, ten hits, and zero errors for the Augusta GreenJackets. Carlos Diaz was credited with the win on the mound and Max Schuh takes the loss.
Monday night the GreenJackets will try to extend their winning streak to eight games against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Sam Young and Josh Walker will be the probable pitching match up for both sides.
