LAKEWOOD, N.J. (July 26, 2015) - The Lakewood BlueClaws rallied for two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away late in a 5-3 win over Kannapolis on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park. Kannapolis (15-15 Second Half, 50-49) has dropped three straight games for the first time since a four-game slide June 26-29.
Lakewood plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Kelvis Valerio. With two on and one out, Scott Kingery singled to score Joel Fisher, and Chase Harris scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 lead. Damek Tomscha added an RBI-double to plate Kingery for a two-run lead, 5-3.
Will Morris (3-0) tossed 7.0 strong innings to earn the win for the BlueClaws, giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. BlueClaws relievers Scott Harris and Matt Hockenberry each spun a perfect inning with Hockenberry earning the save (10) by working the ninth.
Valerio (1-1) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Kannapolis built an early lead with runs in the third and fifth innings. Mason Robbins dropped an RBI-single in the fifth to score Michael Suiter for a 2-0 lead.
Thad Lowry opened with five scoreless, hitless inning on the mound while striking out a career-high-tying seven batters. He gave up hits to the first three batters of the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI-single to Damek Tomscha that ended Lowry's afternoon. Kyle Martin scored the tying run on a Cord Sandberg grounder to pull Lakewood even, 2-2.
Cody Daily reclaimed the lead for Kannapolis, launching a solo home run - his first in Class A ball and fourth of his career - for a 3-2 advantage. Daily finished the day 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Intimidators continue this four-game series in Lakewood on Monday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Luis Martinez (3-9, 5.14 ERA) takes the mound for the Intimidators against the BlueClaws RHP Tyler Viza (4-5, 3.91 ERA).
