THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia split a doubleheader with Kannapolis on Tuesday, winning game one 5-3 before losing game two 2-1. The Power took a 1-0 lead in the first game, but trailed 3-1 after three. Jordan Luplow tripled in a pair to tie the game in the fifth before scoring the go-ahead run on a passed ball. Junior Lopez notched the win and Sam Street earned his second save. In the nightcap, the Intimidators took the early lead, but the Power tied the score in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Chase Simpson. Kannapolis answered in the bottom of the fourth with a run off of Jake Burnette, who was charged with the loss.
MATCH GAME: West Virginia's game one win pushed the team's record to 7-3, matching the best ten game start in Power franchise history. Over the previous ten seasons, only the 2007 club had a winning record after ten games at 7-3. That 2007 team went on to win 17 of 21 games during the first month of the season. All other ten game marks during the other nine seasons had been at .500 or below.
RUBBING IS RACING: West Virginia maintained a one-win lead over the Kannapolis Intimidators in the all-time series at 55 wins to 54 losses. After beating the Intimidators ten times over ten games in 2013, the 2014 edition of the Power lost the season set 8-6. Since 2005, West Virginia is 30-26 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium (formerly Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium). 12 of the two teams 15 meetings this season will be played in North Carolina.
ROLL ON: Chase Simpson's on-base streak was extended in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader with a walk and again in game two with two hits over three at bats. The on-base streak has reached 11 games and is tied with Greensboro's Mason Davis for the longest current such streak in the South Atlantic League. Simpson has played in each Power game this season and has an on-base percentage of .463, fourth best in the league.
ROUGH RETURN: Jake Burnette has only pitched two-thirds of an inning in each of his last two appearances. The right-hander has walked two batters in all three of his appearances and allowed one earned run in each outing as well. The opposition, however, are only batting .235 against Burnette with four hits over 17 at bats in three games.
SCHEDULE REVAMPED: Sunday's postponed game at Lexington will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, April 23, at Appalachian Power Park. The suspended game against Hagerstown on April 15 will be resumed on April 28; the first day of West Virginia's next road trip. The Power and Suns will resume play in the bottom of the second inning with the Suns up 1-0.
REGALADO... MOUNT UP: Jose Regalado was promoted to the Power roster between Tuesday's doubleheader games and made his first start of the season. The right-hander pitched three innings, but did not factor in the decision. To create a roster spot for Regalado, Pittsburgh transferred game one starter John Sever to the West Virginia Black Bears roster.
POWER PROMO UPDATE- APRIL 25: The West Virginia Power will honor the 1990 Charleston Wheelers, the only team to bring a South Atlantic League title to Charleston. The entire team will be inducted onto the Charleston Baseball Wall of Fame and the first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative t-shirt celebrating the 25th anniversary of the championship.
