Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (6-7) couldn't maintain a one-run lead in the ninth inning Wednesday afternoon, and wound up falling to the Delmarva Shorebirds (7-6) by a final of 5-4. Despite the loss the Suns finished their first homestand of the 2015 season with a 4-3 record.

Delmarva began its ninth inning rally with a leadoff double from 3B Jomar Reyes, however he was thrown out at third trying to extend the double to a triple. The next batter, LF Jamill Moquete, made sure he wouldn't meet the same fate as he sent a blast into the visitor's bullpen past the center field wall for his first homerun of the season. That knotted the score at 4-4, but the rally wasn't over yet. Catcher Jonah Heim then stepped to the plate and hit a double to left field. He went to third on a single by SS Jared Breen, and scored what wound up being the winning run on a groundout.

Hagerstown had its own two-run rally in the seventh to come back from a 3-2 deficit. With one out catcher Matt Reistetter hit a bloop fly ball single to left. Second baseman David Masters followed with a line drive single to right, putting runners on first and second. Right fielder Cody Dent then grounded into a force out at second, making it runners on the corners with two outs. That's when SS Osvaldo Abreu delivered the biggest hit of the game for Hagerstown, a double off the center field wall that drove in both runners and gave the Suns their second lead of the game.

The Suns took their first lead in the fourth. With two outs and no one aboard, 1B Jose Marmolejos drilled his third homerun of the season. Left fielder Jeff Gardner followed that up with a double to center field, and a passed ball allowed him to get to third. Then, Reistetter brought him home on a single to left. Reistetter finished the game with four hits in four at-bats.

Delmarva began chipping away at its initial 2-0 deficit in the fifth. Breen sent a two-out double to center field, and that was followed by an RBI single by 2B Guillermo Salas. In the sixth the Shorebirds took their first lead of the game with a two-run frame. The inning began with a leadoff single from CF Jay Gonzalez. First baseman Cameron Kneeland followed with a double, which brought Gozalez home and tied the game at 2-2. Kneeland scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly.

RHP David Ramos (0-2) was charged with the loss for Hagerstown. He pitched the final three innings for the Suns, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two. RHP Derrick Bleeker (1-1) earned the win for Delmarva despite blowing the save. He went two innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits while striking out one. LHP Donnie Hart worked a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the year.

The Suns next head to Lakewood, New Jersey to begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws starting Thursday April 23. The Suns will send RHP Drew Van Orden (1-0) to the mound for his third start of the season. He will square off against RHP Tyler Viza (2-0) for Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
