Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: GreenJackets third baseman Will Callaway made his first start of the season this morning after coming of the disabled list to start the 2015 season. Callaway made the most of his opportunity by going three for four at the plate with two doubles and a run scored during the GreenJackets (5-7) five to two win over the visiting Charleston RiverDogs (8-5).

Callaway started his day off in the third inning when he hit his first of two doubles down the left field line. A bunt single by Cristian Paulino and a throwing error by RiverDogs third baseman Allen Valerio allowed Callaway to cross home plate for the first run of the game. Randy Ortiz knocked in Paulino with a no out triple and Travious Relaford joined in with a RBI single to score Ortiz. Shortstop Jeremy Sy added in the final run of the inning with a double that scored Relaford.

The RiverDogs did not lie down to a four to zero deficit. In the top of the fifth inning Jorge Mateo hit a triple to right field that scored both Allen Valerio and Gosuke Katoh cutting the GreenJackets lead in half with the score of four to two. But GreenJackets shortstop Jeremey Sy had no intention of letting the lead slip away from the GreenJackets. In the bottom of the fifth inning Sy hit a solo shot to left-center field to put the GreenJackets up five to two. Sy's home run was the first home run that had been hit at Lake Olmstead Stadium this season.

From the top of the sixth inning on the GreenJackets pitching staff dug into the mound and held their ground to secure the five to two victory. Relief pitchers EJ Encinosa and Raymundo Montero together worked four innings of relief and only allowing one hit and striking out four RiverDog batters. Jose Reyes had his second start of the season today. Reyes went five innings and did not allow a hit the last time he faced the RiverDogs in Charleston on April 14th. Reyes will take home the win today by throwing four innings giving up two runs and striking out three. The GreenJackets finish their first homestand of the season by winning two out of five games.

Tomorrow morning the GreenJackets will hit the road to Rome to take on the Rome Braves. The series has turned from a four game weekend series to a six game weekend series. The Braves and GreenJackets will have double headers on Friday, April 24th starting at 5:00pm and Sunday, April 26th starting at 2:00pm to make up postponed games from April 18th and April 19th.

The GreenJackets will return home next Tuesday, April 28th as they take on the Lakewood BlueClaws for a three game series and then host the Devlmarva Shorebirds in a four game series. The homestand is packed with promotions such as Pink in the Park, Bark in the Park, Catch a Stretch, and the daily promotional nights as well!
