Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds overcame a rain delay and a late deficit to pull out a 5-4 win over the Hagerstown Suns on Wednesday at Municipal Stadium.
Trailing 4-3 entering the top of the ninth inning, the Shorebirds had just two outs to rally after Jomar Reyes was thrown out at third attempting to stretch a double into a triple to lead off the frame. Jamill Moquete picked up his teammate by blasting his first home run of the season to tie the game. Jonah Heim kept the offense going with his fourth double of the season, followed by a Jared Breen single. Guillermo Salas then gave Delmarva the lead by beating out a double play attempt that scored Heim.
Donnie Hart came on in relief for the bottom of the ninth and recorded his fourth save of the season after stranding runners at first and third. Hart has yet to allow a run in five appearances (4.1 ip) during the 2015 season.
The final inning continued the theme of what was a wild, back-and-forth affair. Hagerstown took the lead first after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Shorebirds responded in the top of the fifth when Salas scored Breen on a single. Delmarva then took the lead in the top of the sixth when a Cameron Kneeland RBI double was followed by a Conor Bierfeldt sacrifice fly.
The game fell under a rain delay lasting one hour and 14 minutes during the bottom of the sixth inning. The Suns then found themselves ahead again in the bottom of the seventh following a two-run double by Osvaldo Abreu. Shorebirds reliever Derrick Bleeker rebounded from this rough patch in the seventh to pitch a scoreless eighth inning and pick up his first win with Delmarva.
Shorebirds starter Matthew Grimes had an effective outing, allowing just one earned run in five innings while striking out six batters.
The morning contest was a productive one for Shorebirds hitters, as Jay Gonzalez collected three base hits for his first multi-hit game in 2015. Kneeland, Breen and Reyes all recorded two hits each to provide a boost throughout the order.
Wednesday's win was a special one for Shorebirds manager Ryan Minor, who now has 300 victories in his managerial career. Of those wins, 239 have come as manager of the Shorebirds.
Delmarva will return to Salisbury for a brief four-game homestand that kicks off against the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Sebastian Vader (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will take to the bump at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium for the Shorebirds.
