THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia beat Delmarva 8-7 on Thursday to seal a series win against the Shorebirds. Edwin Espinal doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning to stake starter Luis Heredia to an early lead. The Power added a run in the third inning on a Chris Diaz bloop double and two more in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, Espinal hit a solo home run as the Power extended their lead out to 8-0. Delmarva made a game of it with seven runs on eight singles and a walk in the bottom of the seventh off Justin Topa. Heredia earned his first win of the season with a quality start. Felipe Gonzalez worked the final three innings, stranding the tying run on base in the seventh and retiring six straight to finish the game for his second save. Espinal paced West Virginia with four hits and four runs batted in.
WINNER WINNER: The Power took six out of eight on their road trip to open the second half. It was the first winning road trip of the season that was longer than one game. The club enters play tonight in a three-way tie for first with Hagerstown and Hickory in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division.
UNLEASH THE CRACKIN': West Virginia is 79-65 against Lakewood all-time after taking three out of four from the BlueClaws over the opening weekend of the second half. The Power have won or split each series at Lakewood since the 2010 season and do not return to FirstEnergy Park this season. West Virginia is 45-37 at home against Lakewood since 2005.
ON TO THE NEXT ONE: Harold Ramirez singled in his first at bat on Thursday and extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games. The outfielder finished with two hits Thursday and has raised his average from .269 to .292 during the streak. Ramirez is one shy of matching Reese McGuire's May streak as the longest by a Power player this year.
COLLINS OUT: Pittsburgh placed Danny Collins on the Disabled List prior to Thursday's game with a left ankle injury. The first baseman, who has also played 26 games in the outfield, is batting .240 over 60 games this season.
TOPA IN: Justin Topa was activated from the Power Disabled List on Thursday and made his first appearance in a game since June 8. The reliever was placed on the DL on June 23 retroactive to June 19 with shoulder tendonitis. Topa has made 14 appearances this season, including nine straight starts to close the first half of the season.
OLE OLE OLE: Edwin Espinal went 4-5 and had his third four hit game of the season. The first baseman is the only Power player to reach on four hits in any game this season. Espinal, the club's leader with 42 runs batted in, also had his first four RBI game in helping the Power best the Shorebirds.
ON THE CLOCK: Tuesday's game took four hours and 30 minutes to complete and was the longest West Virginia Power game this season. In fact, the game was the first four hour-plus game since August 25, 2011, when the Power lost 5-4 in 19 innings at Greensboro. That game took five hours and nine minutes.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 28: West Virginia will host Lakewood and The ZOOperstars Gates open at six and the gates open at seven. The inflatable characters will entertain fans through the course of the game.
POWER POINTS: Power pitchers have hit 47 batters through 76 games this season, putting the club on pace for 85 this season. In would be the fewest in any year since the affiliation with the Pirates began in 2009... West Virginia is 10-18 in one-run games this season. No other club in the league has played as many one-run games as West Virginia has this year.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat the New York Mets 5-2 at PNC Park. Gregory Polanco hit a home run and drove in four to lead the Pirates... Indianapolis lost 8-2 at Durham... Altoona edged Binghamton 3-1. Joely Rodriguez allowed one run over seven innings and earned the win... Bradenton bested Jupiter 6-4.
