Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds battled back from 8-0 down with a seven-run seventh inning, but they fell just short in an epic comeback bid. Losing 8-7, Delmarva has dropped three straight, finishing the longest homestand of the year at an even 4-4. The Shorebirds now go on the road for a week before returning on the 4th of July.
TODAY'S OPPONENT: Jake Johansen will start the series opener for the Hagerstown Suns. Johan- sen has made 13 appearances (12 starts), going 4-2 with a 5.08 ERA. The righty's first start of the year came against Delmarva, way back on April 8th. Johansen allowed two runs in four innings with seven strikeouts. The Washington Nationals drafted Johansen in the 2nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Dallas Baptist University.
19TH SEASON: The 2014 season marks the 19th season of Shorebirds baseball on the Eastern Shore and 18th straight year as a Baltimore Orioles affiliate. The Shorebirds' first season was 1996 as a Montreal Expos farm team.
ORIOLES WATCH: The Baltimore Orioles won 5-4 on a walkoff wild pitch in the 12th inning on Wednesday. Nelson Cruz hit a game-tying grand slam in the 8th inning to force extras against the White Sox. The O's had an offday on Thursday before playing a doubleheader against Tampa Bay at Camden Yards on Friday.
THE IRON IS HOT: 19 out of the 25 players on the Shorebirds active roster appeared for the Ab- erdeen IronBirds in 2013. The IronBirds put together an impressive season, making the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year franchise history. Aberdeen won the McNamara Division in the New York-Penn League with a 40-32 record. The IronBirds lost in the first round of the NYPL play- offs, losing 2 games to 0 against the Tri-City Valley Cats.
