Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC--The Asheville Tourists ran their record in the month of June to 18-6 with an 8-1 drubbing over the Greensboro Grasshoppers Friday night at McCormick Field. The pitching, the hitting, and the fielding were clicking on all cylinders. It was the first meeting of the season between the two teams and Asheville showed Greensboro just what they have been doing to the rest of the league this season.
The Tourists wasted no time taking control of the game. Swinging at the first pitch in almost every at bat, Asheville plated three runs on four hits against Domingo German in the first inning alone. Ryan McMahon, Correlle Prime, and Jordan Patterson all connected with RBI singles.
The Grasshoppers lone run came in the top of the second. Chad Wallach doubled home Felix Munoz with two outs. The run did not affect Konner Wade in the slightest. The Tourists' starter rebounded to pitch 7.1 innings without allowing another run to score. Wade induced 12 groundouts in the game.
German ran into trouble once again in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Emerson Jimenez and David Dahl put runners at first and second for Michael Benjamin with no outs. After Benjamin bunted the first pitch foul then took a ball, he squared to bunt pitch number three. As German released the baseball, Benjamin pulled the bat back and crushed a three-run homer to right-centerfield. The blast gave the Tourists a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth, Asheville added two more against Ramon Del Orbe. McMahon crushed an RBI double to deep center and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jordan Patterson.
Andrew Brown recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning and Troy Neiman struck out the side in the ninth. After dropping the first game of this homestand to the Greenville Drive, Asheville has reeled off four straight wins and will look to make it five with Saturday's 6:05pm game against Greensboro.
