. Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) return home for the first time in 12 days for the team's Second Half Home Opener, hosting the RiverDogs (A, Yankees) in the first game of a 4-game series. Kannapolis took three of four games in Charleston out of the All-Star Break for a series win, however, Charleston leads the all-time series, 68-63.
Intimidating Starter: Thaddius Lowry, 19, makes his eight start of the season and second straight against the RiverDogs. He is coming off consecutive 6.0-inning outings, including a no decision at Charleston on June 22 in which he allowed four runs on seven hits. On June 14, he held Greensboro to three runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings, a career-long. Lowry is 1-2 with a 2.81 ERA (5 ER/16 IP) in his three home starts compared to 1-2 with a 6.48 ERA (12 ER/16.2 IP) in four road outings. He spun a complete-game 5-inning no-hitter in a rain-shortened game at West Virginia on June 3, the first complete game no-no by an Intimidator June 10, 2003, when Brian Miller no-hit the Greensboro Bats (7 innings). Lowry made his pro debut last summer in the Advanced Rookie Appalachian League with Bristol, going 3-5 with a 5.48 ERA in 15 games (seven starts). The Sox selected Lowry in the fifth round of the June 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
Dealing for the 'Dogs: Brady Lail, 20, makes his team-leading 15th start and second straight against Kannapolis. He took no decision on June 22 against the Intimidators, allowing four runs on seven hits over 7.0 innings. This month, he is 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts in June after going 4-0 with a 2.33 ERA in five starts during the month of May. Earlier this season Lail won six consecutive starts from April 23 through May 23, including a career-high 11-strikeout game over 6.0 innings on May 16 against Hickory. He has allowed four runs in three of his last four starts, including a pair of losses June 2 at Hickory and June 7 against Savannah. Lail has not won a game since his 6-game winning streak ended on May 23. He has been better on the road than at home, going 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five away starts compared to 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA in nine starts at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park this season. The Yankees drafted Lail in the 18th round of the June 2012 draft out of Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah. He made his pro debut in 2012 with the GCL Yankees and split last year between the GCL and High-A Tampa.
Last Time Out: Christian Stringer drove in all three runs as the Intimidators dropped the Crawdads, 3-1, in the series finale on Friday at L.P. Frans Stadium, forcing a series-split. Stringer finished 2-3 with a 2-run double in the second inning and an RBI-triple in the seventh to lead Kannapolis to a second straight victory. Hickory's lone run came in the fourth on a Ryan Cordell solo home run (5). Jordan Guerrero notched the win (5-0) for the Intimidators, allowing a run on three hits over 5.0 innings. Relievers Andre Wheeler and Jose Brito evenly split 4.0 scoreless innings to preserve the win.
String of Success: Second baseman Christian Stringer put together his second 3-RBI game of the Hickory series on Thursday, finishing the 4-game set with 7 RBI and a .438 (7-16) average with two home runs, three doubles, a triple and four runs scored. This season, former Rice Owl is batting .348 (8-23) in six games against the Crawdads and .270 (20-74) overall this season.
Guerrero's Greatness: Left-hander Jordan Guerrero spun 5.0 strong innings to earn his team-lead-tying fifth win of the season on Thursday in Hickory. Guerrero is now 5-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 15 games (one start) for Kannapolis. He opened this season in the bullpen before making his first start of the season last night in Hickory. In his previous outing on June 21, Guerrero struck out a career-high six batters over 4.1 innings at Charleston.
Cheaper By The Dozen: The Intimidators scored 12 runs on Wednesday, matching a season-high set on April 25 in a 12-2 win over the Rome Braves. In that game, Kannapolis also set its season-high for greatest margin of victory (10 runs), a figure the team fell a run shy of in Wednesday's 9-run triumph, 12-3, over Hickory.
Walk This Way: Kannapolis drew a season-high 11 walks on Wednesday, surpassing the team's previous total of nine which had been reached twice, including on Tuesday in an 11-10 loss to the Crawdads. Two Hickory pitchers - starter Anyelo Leclerc and reliever Ryne Slack - each walked four batters along the way. The only Crawdads pitcher not to walk a batter was infielder Janluis Castro, who threw the final 1.1 frames for the 'Dads.
Broadcast: This season, all 70 home games and select road games are broadcast on the Kannapolis Intimidators Baseball Network available at IntimidatorsBaseball.com and on the TuneIn Radio App with Josh Feldman, now in his fourth season with the team.
