Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (7-2, 51-28) won their third consecutive one-run game on Friday night, downing the Delmarva Shorebirds (4-5, 42-36) by a final score of 3-2. The Suns are now 13-10 in one-run games this season.
Both teams got off to a fast start offensively. Delmarva put up a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by DH Chance Sisco. Suns starting RHP Jake Johansen had walked the bases loaded with one out when Sisco came to the plate. Third baseman Drew Dosh also attempted to score on the hit by Sisco, but he was gunned down by LF Isaac Ballou at the plate.
Hagerstown knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Shortstop Wilmer Difo hit a one-out infield single to short. Two batters later catcher Spencer Kieboom doubled to right to drive in Difo and tie the game.
The Suns then took their first lead of the game in the third. Back-to-back singles by RF Narciso Mesa and CF Rafael Bautista began the inning, and a fielding error by RF Lucast Herbst allowed both runners to advance into scoring position with no one out. That made it easy for Mesa to trot home on a groundout to short, putting Hagerstown ahead 2-1.
The Shorebirds responded with a run in the top of the fourth. Center fielder Gregory Lorenzo singled with two outs. A fielding error by Bautista on a ball hit to center field by Herbst allowed Lorenzo to score all the way from first and make it 2-2.
The next half inning the Suns again took the lead, and this time for good. Kieboom smacked another double to begin the frame, and moved to third on a groundout to second. A line drive single by Jimmy Yezzo then brought Kieboom home to set what turned out to be the final score.
RHP Ryan Ullmann (3-0) pitched 3.1 innings in relief for Hagerstown to earn the win. He allowed two hits and struck out one without getting charged for a run. LHP David Napoli threw the final two innings for the Suns to earn his second save in as many chances this season. Starting RHP Sebastian Vader (8-4) suffered the loss for Delmarva. He went seven innings, surrendering three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three.
These two teams continue their four-game series at Municipal Stadium on Saturday June 28. The Suns will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-0) to the mound for his 2nd start and appearance of the year. He will square off against LHP Luis Gonzalez (2-0) for the Shorebirds. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
