Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds lost the series opener to the Hagerstown Suns in yet another close game. Delmarva (42-36, 4-5) has lost four consecutive games by a combined margin of five runs.

Delmarva got off to a good start as Jake Johansen stumbled out of the gate. The Suns' starter walked the bases loaded with one out in the first inning. Chance Sisco punched a single to left field to score Jeff Kemp, but Drew Dosch was thrown out at the plate to limit the scoring to one run.

A couple of doubles from Spencer Kieboom were the catalyst for Hagerstown's runs. A two-out double from the Suns' catcher scored Wilmer Difo in the first inning. Kieboom doubled again to lead off the fourth inning. He later scored on a single by Jimmy Yezzo to give Hagerstown a 3-2 lead.

The Suns' bullpen shut down the Shorebirds' attempts to battle back. Ryan Ullman and David Napoli combined for 5 1/3 innings while allowing just three hits. The Shorebirds put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but Rafael Bautista tracked down a deep fly ball by Jeff Kemp just shy of the center field wall.

Ullman earned the victory for Hagerstown, while Napoli took home his second save. Sebastian Vader settled for a loss despite another quality start from the All-Star.

Hagerstown and Delmarva will continue their series with game two on Saturday evening. Lefty Luis Gonzalez (2-0, 1.74) is matched up against left-hander Brett Mooneyham (0-0, 2.25) for the Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Municipal Stadium.
