Greenville Drive News Release
Hickory, NC - The middle innings have not been kind to the Greenville Drive (3-6, 37-41) of late, and Friday was more of the same, as the Hickory Crawdads (7-2, 48-30) scored five times in a span of two innings to pull away for a 6-4 victory.
Kellin Deglan delivered the big blow for Hickory in the bottom of the fifth, depositing a Myles Smith (3-5) offering over the right-field wall for a two-run homer to give the Crawdads a 3-2 lead.
Hickory added three runs in the sixth against Mike Adams. Jairo Beras clocked a solo homer to lead off the frame, and an RBI single by Joe Jackson and an RBI groundout by Nomar Mazara tacked on two more runs.
Cole Wiper (5-6) got the win, allowing five hits and two runs in five innings with six strikeouts. Josh McElwee earned his sixth save after striking out a pair in a perfect ninth inning.
The Drive jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Kendrick Perkins began the inning with a solo homer to right, his fifth of the season. Zach Kapstein followed with a double and later came in on Carlos Asuaje's sacrifice fly.
Jackson put Hickory on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI groundout.
Asuaje smacked a two-run homer in the eighth to score Jimmy Rider, who singled with one out, and cut the Hickory lead to the eventual final.
Beras led the Crawdads offense with three hits, while Deglan and Jackson each had two hits and two RBI. Asuaje's homer was his ninth of the season and was part of a three-RBI night. Rider was the lone Greenville batter with a multi-hit game.
Game two of the series begins at 7:05 on Saturday night. LH Daniel McGrath (3-3, 3.97) takes the ball for the Drive, and the Crawdads will counter with RH Akeem Bostick (4-3, 3.75).
