The Lexington Legends held off an Augusta rally in the ninth inning to earn a 5-4 victory over the GreenJackets Friday night in front of 4,732 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

The Legends took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff batter Alfredo Escalera was hit by a pitch and later stole second base. He moved to third on a single by Ramon Torres, and both scored when Frank Schwindel tripled down the left field line. Schwindel scored on a sacrifice fly by Mauricio Ramos.

Augusta came back with a run in the second inning, but Legends starter Matt Tenuta was able to work out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam when he struck out Chris Lofton and got Ryder Jones to ground into a force play at second base.

The Legends added a run in the third when Torres singled, moved to second on a ground out by Schwindel and scored on Ramos' double.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the eighth. Escalera led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Torres. It was Torres' league-leading 15th sacrifice hit of the season. Schwindel then bounced a single into right field, scoring Escalera and giving the Legends a 5-1 lead.

But Augusta rallied in the ninth. Brandon Bednar singled, Ty Ross walked and Rafael Rodriguez singled, loading the bases with no outs. Gabriel Cornier singled to center field, scoring Bednar. Moreno flied out to center field, but Lofton walked to force in a run. Jones grounded out to first, scoring Rodriguez and cutting Lexington's lead to one at 5-4.

Legends reliever Matt Alvarez then struck out Jeremy Sy to end the game.

Tenuta (3-7) worked the first five innings and got the win. He allowed five hits and one run. He struck out six batters and walked one.

Augusta starter Joan Gregorio (0-2) was the losing pitcher.

The two teams meet again Saturday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
