THE LEAD OFF: The Power spoiled a two-run lead but rallied back to beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. West Virginia scored first on a second inning single by Wyatt Mathisen. After the BlueClaws evened the score in the bottom of the second, West Virginia regained the lead with an Edwin Espinal RBI-single and added an insurance run in the fifth on a base hit by Erich Weiss. Lakewood scored once in the seventh and once in the eighth to tie the game at three. In the top of the ninth, Harold Ramirez drove in Justin Maffei to give the Power the lead back for good. Henry Hirsch vultured the win and Isaac Sanchez recorded his fourth save.
SERIES BUSINESS: West Virginia took three out of four from Lakewood for their fifth series win of the season. The Power have not lost a series at FirstEnergy Park since the 2009 campaign. The club now battles the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, MD. The Shorebirds lead the 2014 season set 5-2 and the all-time series 64-62 with seven meetings remaining between the teams.
TWO WEEKS WORTH: Harold Ramirez's hitting streak has reached 14 straight games with a pair of hits in Sunday. Ramirez is batting .327 since June 5 with four multi-hit games during the streak. The outfielder has now reached safely with at least one base hit in 32 of his 40 games. This streak is the second longest by a Power player in 2014.
JONES OUT: The Pirates have placed shortstop JaCoby Jones on the Power Disabled List with a left knee injury. The infielder, a third round pick in 2013, has played in 68 games for West Virginia this season, batting .259 with a team best eight home runs and 12 stolen bases. The move was made retroactive to June 21 and Jones has become the 13th different player to be placed on West Virginia's DL this season.
MYLES TO BRISTOL: Pittsburgh has transferred outfielder Candon Myles to the Bristol Pirates roster. The outfielder has appeared in 45 games for the Power this season and has a .219 average.
ROSTER REINFORCEMENTS: Ashley Ponce and Jeff Roy were transferred to the West Virginia roster from Bradenton earlier today. Ponce will don a Power jersey for the third straight season. The infielder was batting .143 over 21 games for the Marauders. Roy, an 18th round pick in 2013, skipped the South Atlantic League after hitting .292 over 33 games for Jamestown last season. The center fielder was batting .233 for the Marauders after 61 games and had stolen 18 bases in 30 attempts.
MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH: West Virginia is 9-18 in one-run games this season. No other club in the league has played as many one-run games as West Virginia has this year. The 2013 edition of the club went 22-16 in one-run games. The Power have also lost 11 two-run games and 7 three-run games to account for 36 of their 49 losses this season.
PROMO UPDATE- JUNE 28: West Virginia will host Lakewood and The ZOOperstars Gates open at six and the gates open at seven. The inflatable characters will entertain fans through the course of the game.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia stopped its franchise-record 14 game losing streak with a victory on Thursday. No team in Power history had lost more than eight games in a row at any point over the last nine-plus seasons... The Pirates have also placed pitcher Justin Topa on the Disabled List, retroactive to June 19, and added pitcher Zack Von Rosenberg to West Virginia's roster. Von Rosenberg made 44 appearances for the Power between 2011 and 2012... Former Power All-Star Gregory Polanco made his Major League debut on June 10 and has hit safely in each of his 11 games on the Pirates roster.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh held off the Chicago Cubs 2-1. Brandon Cumpton pitched seven scoreless for his third win... Indianapolis edged Norfolk 5-4 in 12 innings... Altoona won 5-4 at Portland. Justin Howard hit his second home run of the year in the victory... Bradenton lost 6-3 to Palm Beach. John Kuchno allowed all six runs over seven innings of work... Jamestown scored four in the first and five in the fifth in a 9-3 win over Williamsport... Bristol fell 12-3 to Burlington.
